Tretter Powers Miami (Ohio) Past Georgia Southern in Women’s Basketball
OXFORD, Ohio (Interstat) — Amber Tretter scored 32 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead Miami (Ohio) to a 78-67 victory over Georgia Southern in a nonconference women’s basketball game Saturday at Millett Hall.
The Redhawks improved to 19-4 overall, while the Eagles fell to 16-6.
Tretter, a 6-foot-1 junior from Ferdinand, Indiana, dominated inside, adding four blocks in 35 minutes. She was complemented by Amber Scalia, who scored 21 points, and Ilse de Vries, who had 14 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Tamar Singer dished out nine assists for Miami.
Georgia Southern was led by McKenna Eddings with 19 points and seven rebounds. Destiny Garrett added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Kishyah Anderson and Jamiria Jones each scored 12 points.
The most important stretch of the game came late in the third quarter and established a cushion Miami would not relinquish. Leading 50-48 after a Jamiria Jones 3-pointer for Georgia Southern with 3:41 left in the period, the Redhawks closed the quarter on an 8-0 run. Tamar Singer started it with a layup, and after a Georgia Southern turnover, Amber Tretter converted inside off a feed from Amber Scalia. Following another Eagles miss, Tretter secured a defensive rebound, and Miami worked the clock down before Tretter scored again on a layup from Singer just before the buzzer, pushing the lead to 58-48.
Georgia Southern never got closer than seven points the rest of the way. The Eagles cut the deficit to 66-59 on a Destiny Garrett 3-pointer with 5:37 remaining in the fourth, but Miami answered with a Nuria Jurjo layup and a Tretter layup to push the lead back to 11 and effectively seal the game.
Miami set the tone early, using a 10-0 run in the first quarter to turn a 6-3 deficit into a 13-6 lead. The Redhawks led 21-15 after one quarter and maintained a 38-34 advantage at halftime despite Georgia Southern shooting 50 percent from the field in the first half.
The Redhawks’ interior presence was decisive. They outscored Georgia Southern 44-28 in the paint and outrebounded the Eagles 36-30. Miami also blocked seven shots, with Tretter and de Vries combining for seven of them.
Both teams struggled with ball security, combining for 35 turnovers. Each team scored 16 points off those miscues. Miami was more efficient offensively, shooting 50.9 percent from the field (29 of 57) compared to Georgia Southern’s 43.6 percent (24 of 55). The Redhawks also held a slight edge from 3-point range, making 7 of 15 attempts while the Eagles hit 6 of 14.
Miami’s victory continued its strong midseason form, having won 12 of its last 13 games. Georgia Southern saw a three-game winning streak snapped.
The game was played before an announced crowd of 507.
