Louisiana-Lafayette Routs Akron for Road Win

AKRON, Ohio (Interstat) — In a season defined by struggles, the Louisiana-Lafayette women’s basketball team found a rare formula for success Saturday: a dominant start and relentless defensive pressure. The Ragin’ Cajuns built a substantial first-quarter lead and never relinquished it, defeating the Akron Zips 82-71 at James A. Rhodes Arena.

The victory, just the third of the season for Louisiana-Lafayette against 21 losses, was fueled by a 27-point opening period and a defensive effort that forced 25 Akron turnovers. The Ragin’ Cajuns converted those miscues into 27 points, a decisive margin in the contest. Akron fell to 5-18.

The most critical phase of the game unfolded from the opening tip. Louisiana-Lafayette raced to a 9-0 lead within the first three minutes, capitalizing on early Akron turnovers and missed shots. Guard Amijah Price, who finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds, set the tone with a 3-pointer on the game’s first possession. The Ragin’ Cajuns’ aggressive defense disrupted Akron’s offensive flow, leading to a series of rushed attempts and giveaways.

Akron, which entered the game as a significant favorite according to advanced metrics, struggled to find an answer. While the Zips settled to score 16 points in each of the first two quarters, they could not contain Louisiana-Lafayette’s efficient attack. The Ragin’ Cajuns shot 50% from the field in the first half, led by Imani Daniel’s interior scoring. Daniel, a guard from Gramercy, Louisiana, posted a game-high 21 points in just 23 minutes.

The Zips were led by the backcourt duo of Shaena Brew and Ni’Rah Clark. Brew, from Rialto, California, scored 17 points and dished out seven assists. Clark, a Toledo, Ohio native, added 19 points and seven rebounds. Their efforts kept Akron within striking distance, but the team’s 7-for-27 shooting from 3-point range and the constant pressure from the Louisiana-Lafayette defense proved insurmountable.

Louisiana-Lafayette’s lead ballooned to 17 points late in the third quarter before Akron mounted its most serious challenge. A 9-2 run by the Zips early in the fourth quarter, capped by a Corinne Reed layup, cut the deficit to 54-49 with 8:08 remaining, prompting a Ragin’ Cajuns timeout.

The response was immediate. Out of the stoppage, Louisiana-Lafayette executed a quick play leading to a Mikaylah Manley jumper. On the ensuing possession, a steal by Manley led to an Amijah Price layup and a foul, completing a three-point play. Within a minute, the lead was back to 10 points, effectively extinguishing Akron’s rally. Manley finished with 13 points and five assists.

Louisiana-Lafayette maintained its advantage through superior ball security and clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch. The Ragin’ Cajuns committed only 14 turnovers and made 22 of 30 attempts from the foul line. Bianca Silva of Florianopolis, Brazil, provided a steady all-around performance with 11 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

The game was a stark contrast in efficiency. Louisiana-Lafayette scored 82 points on 74 possessions, an offensive rating of 110.4. Akron managed just 71 points on 79 possessions, an offensive rating of 89.5. The Ragin’ Cajuns also dominated points in the paint, 38-28, underscoring their effective penetration and post play.

A crowd of 747 watched as Louisiana-Lafayette secured its first road win since a December 29 victory over NAIA opponent Dillard, and only its second win against a Division I foe this season. The Ragin’ Cajuns will look to build on the performance when they travel to face Troy on Thursday.

Akron, which had won two of its last three games, will aim to regroup on the road at Central Michigan on Wednesday.
