Bowling Green Outlasts Coastal Carolina in High-Tempo Women’s Basketball Contest
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (Interstat) — In a game defined by relentless pressure and a staggering 58 combined turnovers, the Bowling Green Falcons used a decisive third-quarter surge to pull away from the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers for a 93-82 victory in nonconference women’s basketball on Saturday at Stroh Center.
A crowd of 1,807 saw the Falcons improve to 12-11 overall, while Coastal Carolina fell to 11-14.
The contest was a chaotic affair from the outset, with both teams employing aggressive, trapping defenses. The result was a frenetic pace that led to 29 turnovers apiece. Bowling Green, however, proved far more efficient at converting those mistakes into points, outscoring Coastal Carolina 35-24 off turnovers. The Falcons also capitalized on their offensive opportunities, shooting 58.9% from the field compared to the Chanticleers’ 42.9%.
The game remained tight through the first half, with Bowling Green taking a 43-34 lead into halftime. The pivotal sequence came early in the third quarter. Leading 47-42, the Falcons unleashed a 13-2 run over a three-minute span to seize control. The run was fueled by the defensive intensity of guards Johnea Donahue and Kaia Woods, who combined for multiple steals that ignited the transition offense. Lauren Gerken, a 6-foot-1 forward from Findlay, Ohio, was instrumental during the stretch, scoring on putbacks and drawing fouls. Her three-point play with 6:48 left in the quarter capped the run and gave Bowling Green a commanding 60-44 advantage.
Coastal Carolina, which scored 28 points in the third quarter behind the efforts of Tessa Grady and Olivia Klanac, never fully recovered from that deficit. The Chanticleers cut the lead to 11 points on several occasions in the fourth quarter but could not string together enough stops to mount a serious threat, as Bowling Green consistently answered with scores in the paint.
Joniyah Bland-Fitzpatrick, a 5-foot-10 guard from New London, Connecticut, led all scorers and was the top star for Bowling Green. She delivered a breakout performance with 21 points and five rebounds in just 16 minutes off the bench, providing a critical offensive spark. Her efficiency was a hallmark of the Falcons’ night; she shot 9 of 11 from the field, scoring primarily on drives and cuts to the basket.
Gerken complemented her with 18 points and six rebounds. Woods, a 5-foot-3 guard from Tiffin, Ohio, directed the offense with seven assists to go with 12 points. Donahue filled the stat sheet with six points, seven rebounds, six assists and a game-high five steals.
For Coastal Carolina, Grady, a Dublin, Ohio native playing in her home state, logged 36 minutes and finished with 21 points and five rebounds. Kinsea Grimes added 17 points, and Klanac scored 13. The Chanticleers attempted 33 free throws, making 26, but were ultimately undone by the Falcons’ superior shooting and their own miscues, which negated a 16-steal effort of their own.
Bowling Green’s national statistical ELO system projection gave the Falcons a 66.6% probability to win, a forecast they fulfilled by dominating key efficiency metrics. The Falcons posted an offensive rating of 101.9 points per 100 possessions, significantly better than Coastal Carolina’s 89.4.
The Falcons will look to build on the win when they host Buffalo on Tuesday. Coastal Carolina continues its road trip at Old Dominion on Wednesday.
