Oklahoma Routs Florida State Behind Chavez’s 29 Points
FORT MYERS, Fla. (Interstat) — In a high-octane offensive showcase, the Oklahoma Sooners used a dominant second half to pull away from the Florida State Seminoles for a 109-91 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Florida SouthWestern State.
The game, played before an announced crowd of 1,204, was a tale of two halves, with the teams locked in a tight battle through two quarters before Oklahoma’s superior efficiency and firepower took over after halftime.
The Sooners improved their record to 7-1 overall, while the Seminoles fell to 4-5.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair characterized by hot three-point shooting from Florida State. The Seminoles connected on 11 three-pointers before the break, keeping pace with an Oklahoma offense that consistently found ways to score. The teams were tied at 42-42 heading into the locker rooms.
The momentum shifted decisively in the third quarter. Oklahoma exploded for 31 points, outscoring Florida State by eight to establish a 73-65 lead. The Sooners then put the game out of reach with a 35-point fourth quarter, their highest-scoring period of the contest, while Florida State answered with 26.
The statistical story of the game was one of stark contrasts in efficiency and interior dominance. While Florida State relied heavily on the three-ball, making 19 of 41 attempts, Oklahoma’s offense was more balanced and potent. The Sooners scored 32 points in the paint compared to just 12 for the Seminoles and were relentless in getting to the free-throw line, making 32 of 40 attempts. Florida State attempted 25 free throws, making 18.
Oklahoma also controlled the glass, securing 14 offensive rebounds that led to numerous second-chance opportunities, while Florida State managed only five. Defensively, the Sooners recorded six blocks and six steals, disrupting the Seminoles’ offensive flow.
The Sooners were led by a stellar performance from freshman guard Aaliyah Chavez of Lubbock, Texas. Chavez poured in 29 points, dished out six assists, and added a block in 33 minutes of action. She was instrumental in Oklahoma’s second-half surge, hitting critical shots and facilitating the offense.
Sahara Williams of Waterloo, Iowa, provided a strong inside presence for Oklahoma, scoring 16 points and anchoring the defense. Zya Vann, from Edmond, Oklahoma, added 15 points, and post player Raegan Beers of Littleton, Colorado, contributed 14 points and controlled the paint with two blocks.
For Florida State, Jasmine Shavers of Mesquite, Texas, led all scorers with 24 points in just 26 minutes. Sydney Bowles of Lithonia, Georgia, was a key factor in the Seminoles’ first-half success, finishing with 18 points, including several three-pointers, and adding a block. Solè Williams from Cincinnati, Ohio, tallied 15 points and five assists, while Emma Risch of Melbourne, Florida, came off the bench to score 16 points.
Despite the loss, Florida State’s offense showed flashes of its potential, particularly from beyond the arc. However, they were unable to match Oklahoma’s consistent scoring output and defensive pressure over the full 40 minutes. The Seminoles will look to rebound when they host Georgia on Wednesday. Oklahoma, continuing its strong start to the season, returns home to face North Carolina State, also on Wednesday.
