Baylor edges Davidson in overtime thriller

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (Interstat) — In a thrilling, back-and-forth contest that required an extra period to decide, the Baylor Lady Bears outlasted the Davidson Wildcats 74-72 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Saturday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

The game was a tale of two halves and a monumental individual performance, ultimately decided in the final seconds of overtime.

Davidson, led by a spectacular 33-point outing from Charlise Dunn, controlled the first half. The Wildcats surged in the second quarter, outscoring Baylor 20-18 to take a 34-31 lead into halftime. Dunn, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Victoria Point, Australia, was the engine for the Wildcats, scoring from all levels and playing 43 minutes in the contest.

Baylor emerged from the locker room with renewed defensive intensity in the third quarter, holding Davidson to just eight points. The Lady Bears took a 47-42 lead into the final frame, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.

The fourth quarter saw both teams trade blows. Davidson’s offense reignited, pouring in 21 points, while Baylor managed 16. The Wildcats clawed their way back, forcing the game into overtime tied at 63.

The extra period was a microcosm of the entire game, featuring lead changes and clutch plays. With the score tied at 72 and just 12 seconds remaining, Baylor’s Yuting Deng delivered the final blow. The 6-foot guard from Hunan, China, drove to the basket and converted a decisive layup to put the Lady Bears ahead for good.

Dunn had a chance to tie or win the game for Davidson, drawing a foul on a 3-point attempt with three seconds left. She made the first two free throws to tie the game at 72 but missed the third, and Baylor secured the rebound to seal the victory.

While Dunn’s 33 points were the game’s high mark, Baylor’s victory was a product of a more balanced offensive attack and a formidable defensive presence in the paint. Taliah Scott, a guard from Orange Park, Florida, led the Lady Bears with 22 points. Kiersten Johnson, a 6-foot-4 post player from Duncanville, Texas, anchored the defense with six blocked shots to go with her 10 points.

Key contributions also came from Darianna Littlepage-Buggs and Yuting Deng, who each scored 12 points for Baylor. For Davidson, Katie Donovan, a 5-foot-11 guard from Queensland, Australia, provided crucial support with 15 points, while Edina Strausz of Budapest, Hungary, added 10 points off the bench.

With the win, Baylor improved its season record to 5-1. The Lady Bears will look to build on the hard-fought victory when they host Louisiana Tech on Wednesday.

Davidson, which fell to 3-3 with the heartbreaking loss, will return home to face Ohio next Sunday. The Wildcats have shown resilience in the early season, with their three losses coming by a combined 14 points.
