Iowa Edges Baylor in Defensive Struggle at ESPN Wide World of Sports

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by missed shots and tenacious effort, the Iowa Hawkeyes remained undefeated, outlasting the Baylor Lady Bears 57-52 in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Thursday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

The contest, played before a crowd of 2,532, was a stark departure from the high-octane offenses both teams had displayed in their early-season schedules. The combined 109 points fell well below the pregame over/under line of 139.5, underscoring the difficulty both teams had in finding offensive rhythm.

Iowa improved its season record to 5-0, while Baylor suffered its first loss, dropping to 4-1.

The Hawkeyes built an early lead, holding Baylor to just nine points in the first quarter and taking an 11-9 advantage. The Lady Bears responded with their best period in the second quarter, outscoring Iowa 19-14 to claim a narrow 28-25 lead at halftime. The game remained a tight, back-and-forth affair through the second half, with Iowa reclaiming control by outscoring Baylor 16-11 in the third quarter and holding on through a low-scoring final frame where both teams managed 16 and 13 points, respectively.

The story of the game was written in the shooting percentages. Both teams struggled mightily from the floor. Iowa made 21 of 61 field goal attempts, while Baylor was even colder, connecting on just 17 of 59 shots. From beyond the arc, Baylor hoisted 32 attempts but made only eight. Iowa was more efficient from deep, hitting 5 of 14, but attempted far fewer. The teams were nearly identical in other key statistical areas, with each recording six assists and six steals, and both committing 12 turnovers.

Baylor’s defense was anchored by a formidable shot-blocking presence, swatting away 11 Iowa attempts. Bella Fontleroy was a primary disruptor, recording four of those blocks.

The individual scoring battle was decisively won by Baylor’s Taliah Scott. The guard from Orange Park, Florida, poured in 32 points in 36 minutes of action, carrying the offensive load for the Lady Bears. However, she received limited scoring support from her teammates.

Iowa countered with a more balanced offensive attack. Ava Heiden, a 6-foot-4 post player from Sherwood, Oregon, delivered a strong performance with 18 points. She was complemented by Taylor Stremlow of Verona, Wisconsin, who added 12 points and four assists, and Hannah Stuelke of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who chipped in 10 points.

A key differentiator was Iowa’s dominance in the paint, where they outscored Baylor 26 to 12. The Hawkeyes also capitalized more effectively on mistakes, scoring 13 points off turnovers compared to Baylor’s six.

Baylor held a significant advantage on the offensive glass, grabbing 10 rebounds to Iowa’s five, but was unable to consistently convert those second chances into points in the face of Iowa’s stout interior defense.

The game’s tempo and offensive struggles were reflected in the advanced metrics. Iowa scored 57 points from 76 possessions for an offensive rating of 75.4, while Baylor’s 52 points from 69 possessions resulted in an almost identical offensive rating of 75.3.

The result was a mild upset based on pregame projections. Interstat’s ELO system had given Iowa a 54.40 percent probability to win, and the Hawkeyes had been installed as a slim 1.5-point favorite.

Iowa’s next game is against Miami (Fla.) on Saturday, also at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Kissimmee. Baylor will look to rebound on Saturday against Davidson at the same venue.
