UAB at Memphis
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Interstat) — Two American Athletic Conference women’s basketball teams seeking to end difficult seasons on a positive note will meet Wednesday when the Memphis Tigers host the UAB Blazers at FedExForum.
Both teams enter the regular season finale with losing records. UAB (10-18) has dropped three straight, including an 86-57 home loss to Temple on Saturday. Memphis (9-20) has lost seven of its last eight, most recently falling 67-55 at Texas-San Antonio on Sunday.
The matchup is a quick rematch from Feb. 10, when the Blazers edged the Tigers 58-56 in Birmingham. UAB guard Journey Armstead, a key player to watch, dished out five assists in that victory. Armstead is coming off a 13-point, six-assist performance against Temple.
Memphis will counter with guard Daejah Richmond, who has been a consistent offensive force. Richmond scored 17 points in the loss to UTSA and has averaged 19.1 points over her last seven games, including a 21-point, seven-rebound, six-assist effort in a narrow loss to Temple on Feb. 22.
The Tigers’ lone recent win was an 88-80 double-overtime victory over East Carolina on Feb. 25, where Richmond logged 47 minutes and scored 18 points.
UAB’s recent struggles include a 54-60 loss to Wichita State and a 55-59 defeat at Tulsa. Beyond Armstead, Cali Smallwood (13 points vs. Temple) and Ashlyn Howard have provided supplementary scoring.
For Memphis, Paris Gaines and Amauri Williams have offered support to Richmond. Williams posted 11 points in the last outing.
Wednesday’s contest represents a final opportunity for both squads to build momentum before the conference tournament. Following this game, UAB will host Charlotte on Saturday, while Memphis will welcome Wichita State.
Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST.
