Virginia Women Roll Past Maryland-Eastern Shore in Nonconference Tilt
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (Interstat) — The Virginia women’s basketball team delivered a commanding performance Sunday afternoon, overwhelming the visiting Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks 92-59 at John Paul Jones Arena.
In front of a crowd of 3,742, the Cavaliers seized control from the opening tip and never relented, improving their season record to 6-2. The loss dropped the Hawks to an even 5-5.
Virginia’s offense operated with ruthless efficiency, particularly in the first and third quarters where they scored 26 points in each frame. The Cavaliers built a 26-17 lead after the first quarter and extended it to a 45-30 advantage by halftime. Any hope of a Hawks comeback was extinguished in the third quarter as Virginia stretched its lead, entering the final period with a 71-45 cushion.
The statistical disparity told the story of the lopsided contest. Virginia shot a blistering 54.7 percent from the floor, converting 35 of 64 attempts. Maryland-Eastern Shore struggled offensively, managing to make only 18 of 58 shots for a 31 percent success rate. The Cavaliers also dominated the interior, outscoring the Hawks 44 to 20 in the paint.
A defining characteristic of Virginia’s victory was its formidable defense, which registered 13 blocked shots. This rim protection stifled countless Hawks scoring opportunities and fueled Virginia’s transition game. The Cavaliers also capitalized on Maryland-Eastern Shore’s mistakes, scoring 19 points off turnovers compared to just 2 for the Hawks.
Virginia’s offensive execution was reflected in its advanced metrics. The team scored 92 points from 72 possessions, resulting in an elite offensive rating of 127.0. Maryland-Eastern Shore, by contrast, managed an offensive rating of just 82.1 from the same number of possessions.
The Cavaliers were led by a balanced and potent scoring attack. Guard Kymora Johnson, a Charlottesville native, stuffed the stat sheet with 20 points, six rebounds, five assists and a block in 39 minutes of action. Forward Tabitha Amanze was a force in the paint, just missing a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds.
Supporting contributions came from across the roster. Romi Levy scored 14 points, grabbed six rebounds and swatted four shots, while Jillian Brown added 15 points and four rebounds. Guard Gabby White provided a spark off the bench with a well-rounded line of 10 points, six rebounds and three assists in just 13 minutes.
Maryland-Eastern Shore was led by Ashanti Lynch, who scored 13 points. Lainey Allen contributed 11 points and four rebounds, and Brianna Barnes added 10 points and seven rebounds, but the Hawks could not find a consistent offensive rhythm against Virginia’s swarming defense.
The game’s opening sequence set the tone. Virginia’s Amanze won the opening tip, leading to a quick pull-up jumper from Levy for the first points. The teams traded baskets in the early minutes, with a three-pointer from Maryland-Eastern Shore’s Kalise Hill tying the game briefly. Virginia then unleashed a 10-0 run, punctuated by a Levy three-pointer and a transition layup from Johnson, to establish a double-digit lead from which the Hawks would never recover.
Virginia now looks ahead to a road test against Vanderbilt on Wednesday. Maryland-Eastern Shore continues its challenging road stretch with a game at Wichita State on Friday.
