Warhawks Dominate, Remain Undefeated With Win Over Lady Golden Lions
MONROE, La. (Interstat) — The Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks used a dominant first half and a balanced scoring attack to remain undefeated, cruising to a 79-50 victory over the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Lady Golden Lions in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Fant-Ewing Coliseum.
Guard Jazmine Jackson led all scorers with 16 points, pacing a Warhawks offense that never trailed. Louisiana-Monroe improved to 4-0 on the young season, while Arkansas-Pine Bluff fell to 1-3.
The Warhawks seized control from the opening tip, establishing a 23-11 lead by the end of the first quarter. The defensive pressure from the home team forced the Lady Golden Lions into a series of early turnovers, stifling their offensive rhythm. The momentum continued in the second period as Louisiana-Monroe extended its advantage, outscoring Arkansas-Pine Bluff 21-19 to take a commanding 44-30 lead into halftime.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff, which shot poorly from the field throughout the contest, could not mount a comeback after the break. The teams played to a 14-14 stalemate in the third quarter before the Warhawks put the game fully out of reach with a 21-6 scoring edge in the final period.
Jackson, a 5-foot-8 guard from Jacksonville, Florida, filled the stat sheet beyond her scoring, adding eight rebounds and two assists in 24 minutes of action. She was instrumental in the Warhawks’ offensive sets, creating opportunities for herself and her teammates.
The Warhawks received significant contributions from across their roster. Center Marcavia Shavers of Biloxi, Mississippi, provided a strong interior presence, scoring eight points and grabbing three rebounds. Forward Marissa Gasaway from Louisville, Kentucky, was a force on the boards, pulling down five rebounds to go with seven points and two assists.
The depth of the Louisiana-Monroe bench was also a key factor. Forwards Nailea Nicholas and Keshunti Nichols, along with guard Katelyn Chomko, provided valuable minutes and scoring punch. Nicholas, from Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, scored six points, while Nichols from Pearl, Mississippi, added seven. Chomko, a guard from Houston, Texas, was particularly efficient in her limited time, scoring nine points, including a pair of late three-pointers that helped seal the victory.
For the Lady Golden Lions, the backcourt duo of Jasmine Davis and Jailah Pelly shouldered much of the offensive load. Davis, a guard from Little Rock, Arkansas, finished with 10 points, four rebounds and a blocked shot. Pelly, a St. Louis, Missouri, native, logged a team-high 33 minutes, scoring 11 points and dishing out three assists.
Forward Khaniah Gardner of Chicago, Illinois, contributed six points, four rebounds and a team-high four assists for Arkansas-Pine Bluff, but the team struggled with ball security and converting scoring chances against a stout Warhawks defense.
The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 738 at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The victory extends Louisiana-Monroe’s strong start, which includes previous wins over Grambling, Louisiana Tech and Eastern Michigan. Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s lone win this season came against Memphis, with losses to Sam Houston and Arkansas preceding Sunday’s contest.
The Lady Golden Lions will look to rebound quickly as they travel to face Louisiana Tech on Tuesday. Louisiana-Monroe’s next test will be on the road against Sam Houston on Thursday.
