George Mason rolls past Florida A&M in women’s basketball
FAIRFAX, Va. (Interstat) — The George Mason Patriots delivered a commanding performance on both ends of the floor, cruising to an 88-40 victory over the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers in a non-conference women’s basketball game Monday night at EagleBank Arena.
From the opening tip, George Mason established a dominant tone, outscoring Florida A&M 26-10 in the first quarter and 27-15 in the second to build an insurmountable 53-25 halftime lead. The Patriots’ relentless pressure never subsided, as they extended their advantage with a 22-7 third quarter before closing out the contest.
The game was defined by George Mason’s stifling defense and efficient offense. The Patriots forced 18 Lady Rattlers turnovers, converting them into 28 points, while committing only six turnovers of their own. George Mason also controlled the glass, hauling in 20 offensive rebounds which led to numerous second-chance opportunities and a 26-16 advantage in points in the paint.
Offensively, the Patriots were led by a balanced scoring attack. Kennedy Harris, a 5-foot-6 guard from Hampton, Virginia, paced all scorers with 15 points and added five assists in 20 minutes of action. Zahirah Walton contributed 14 points, two assists and two blocks, while Page Greenburg added 11 points and two assists. Mary Amoateng, a 5-foot-6 guard from Baltimore, and Maliyah Johnson, a 6-foot-3 forward from Chicago, also made significant contributions, with Amoateng tallying 10 points and five assists and Johnson adding eight points.
As a team, George Mason shot 42 percent from the floor, connecting on 13 of 31 attempts from beyond the three-point arc. Their offensive rating of 123.9 on 71 possessions underscored their scoring efficiency throughout the night.
Conversely, Florida A&M struggled to find any offensive rhythm. The Lady Rattlers shot just 29.6 percent from the field and a meager 15.8 percent from three-point range. Their offensive rating of 57.3 highlighted the difficulty they faced against the Patriots’ defensive scheme.
Brooklyn Swann of Gastonia, North Carolina, led the Lady Rattlers with nine points. Cornelia Ellington of Atlanta, Georgia, added eight points and three assists in a team-high 31 minutes, but Florida A&M could not string together enough successful possessions to mount a challenge.
With the loss, Florida A&M falls to 0-3 on the young season, having previously suffered decisive defeats to Florida State and Howard. George Mason improves to 2-1, rebounding from a season-opening overtime loss at Temple with a road win at James Madison prior to this home victory.
The announced attendance at EagleBank Arena was 947. According to Interstat’s ELO system, George Mason entered the game with a 99.70 percent probability to win.
Florida A&M looks for its first win on Nov. 21 when it travels to face UCF. George Mason returns to action at home on Nov. 14 against Georgetown.
