UAB at Chattanooga
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (Interstat) — Eleecia Carter scored 25 points and UAB capitalized on efficient offense and a strong performance from the free-throw line to defeat Chattanooga 79-66 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at McKenzie Arena.
The Blazers evened their record at 2-2 while the Lady Mocs fell to 2-3.
UAB built its victory on a significant advantage from beyond the arc and at the charity stripe. The Blazers connected on 8 of 19 three-point attempts, while Chattanooga managed just 4 of 18 from long range. The disparity was even more pronounced at the free-throw line, where UAB shot 25 for 28 compared to Chattanooga’s 16 for 24.
Carter, a guard from Winter Garden, Florida, led all scorers and was instrumental in the Blazers’ offensive execution. She was complemented by Sofia Munoz, who added 13 points and a team-high five assists. Monae Duffy anchored the interior for UAB, pulling down 12 rebounds to go with nine points.
Chattanooga was led by Caia Elisaldez, who matched Carter’s game-high 25 points. Despite the loss, the Lady Mocs found success inside, outscoring UAB 32-24 in the paint and grabbing 10 offensive rebounds to UAB’s seven.
The game was a tale of offensive efficiency. UAB scored its 79 points on 72 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of 109.3. Chattanooga, by contrast, was less effective with its opportunities, posting an offensive rating of 89.9 by scoring 66 points on 73 possessions.
Defensively, Chattanooga forced 15 UAB turnovers and recorded nine steals and four blocks, but it was not enough to overcome UAB’s sharp shooting and ability to convert from the free-throw line down the stretch. UAB also capitalized more on mistakes, scoring 20 points off turnovers compared to Chattanooga’s 11.
The result was an upset according to pregame projections, as Interstat’s ELO system had given Chattanooga a 74.6 percent probability of winning.
UAB looks to build on the win when it travels to face Murray State on Saturday. Chattanooga will try to regroup at home against Austin Peay on Thursday.
