Maryland-Eastern Shore at Loyola Chicago

CHICAGO (Interstat) — The Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks withstood a furious second-half rally from the Loyola Chicago Ramblers to secure a 70-67 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Joseph Gentile Center.

In a contest defined by runs and defensive pressure, the Hawks built a commanding 22-13 lead after the first quarter and extended it to a 38-22 advantage by halftime. The Ramblers, however, erupted after the break, outscoring Maryland-Eastern Shore 26-15 in the third quarter to turn a 16-point deficit into a five-point game heading into the final period.

Loyola Chicago’s comeback bid, which saw them trim the lead to a single possession on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter, ultimately fell short in the final seconds. The Ramblers had a chance to tie, but a blocked shot and a missed three-pointer in the closing moments sealed the win for the Hawks.

Maryland-Eastern Shore was led by a dominant performance from Brianna Barnes, who scored 20 points and dished out five assists. Lainey Allen recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, adding three blocks to anchor the Hawks’ interior defense.

Loyola Chicago’s effort was spearheaded by Brooklyn Vaughn, who also notched a double-double with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds. Rosalie Mercille contributed 14 points and six rebounds, while Audrey Deptula added 11 points.

Statistically, the game was a defensive struggle with nearly identical offensive ratings. The Hawks scored 70 points on 73 possessions for a rating of 95.3, while the Ramblers managed 67 points on 70 possessions for a rating of 95.5. Maryland-Eastern Shore capitalized on Loyola Chicago’s 19 turnovers, converting them into 21 points. The Hawks also held a significant 36-28 advantage in points in the paint.

From the field, Maryland-Eastern Shore shot 26 for 58, while Loyola Chicago was 24 for 59. The Ramblers were perfect from the free-throw line, making all 13 of their attempts, but were hampered by a higher turnover count.

The victory improves Maryland-Eastern Shore’s record to 3-2 on the young season, while Loyola Chicago falls to 1-3. The announced attendance was 576.

The Hawks will next host Maryland-Baltimore County on Thursday. Loyola Chicago returns to action Tuesday at home against Illinois State.
