Hawks Hold Off Ramblers’ Rally for Road Victory
CHICAGO (Interstat) — In a game defined by dramatic momentum shifts and a frantic final minute, the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks held off a furious second-half rally by the Loyola Chicago Ramblers to secure a 70-67 victory in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Joseph Gentile Center.
The Hawks built a commanding 20-point lead in the first half, only to see the Ramblers storm back to take a brief lead in the fourth quarter before Maryland-Eastern Shore made the decisive plays in the final seconds to improve to 3-2 on the season. Loyola Chicago fell to 1-3.
Maryland-Eastern Shore dominated the opening half, racing out to a 22-13 lead after the first quarter and extending it to 38-22 by halftime. The Hawks’ defense was the catalyst, forcing 12 Loyola Chicago turnovers in the first 20 minutes and converting them into easy scoring opportunities.
The script flipped entirely after the break. Loyola Chicago erupted for 26 points in the third quarter, spearheaded by a relentless effort from Brooklyn Vaughn. The Ramblers’ surge continued into the fourth, where they briefly grabbed their first lead of the game. A three-pointer by Rosalie Mercille and a driving layup from Vaughn capped the comeback, putting Loyola Chicago ahead.
The game remained a tense, one-possession affair for the final six minutes. With the Hawks clinging to a 67-65 lead, Loyola Chicago’ Audrey Deptula hit a floating jumper with just over a minute remaining to tie the game.
On the ensuing possession, Maryland-Eastern Shore’s Brianna Barnes was fouled and sent to the free-throw line with three seconds left. Barnes made the first free throw to put the Hawks up by one but missed the second, leaving the door open for the Ramblers.
Loyola Chicago secured the rebound and called a timeout to advance the ball. On the final inbounds play, the Ramblers got two point-blank looks to win the game. Vaughn’s layup attempt was blocked by Desi Taylor, and the offensive rebound led to a rushed three-point attempt by Mercille that missed as time expired, sealing the Hawks’ victory.
Barnes led the Hawks with 20 points, five rebounds and five assists. Lainey Allen recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, adding three crucial blocks, including a key swat in the final minute.
For Loyola Chicago, Vaughn was the engine of the comeback, finishing with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds. Mercille added 14 points and six rebounds, while Deptula contributed 11 points and six boards. Alexa Kinas facilitated the offense with six assists.
Statistically, the game was a study in contrasts. The Hawks won the battle in the paint, 36-28, and scored 21 points off 19 Rambler turnovers. Loyola Chicago, however, was perfect from the free-throw line, making all 13 of its attempts, while Maryland-Eastern Shore went 15 for 22. The Ramblers also connected on six three-pointers to the Hawks’ three.
Despite the loss, Loyola Chicago held a slight edge in offensive efficiency, posting a rating of 95.5 on 70 possessions compared to Maryland-Eastern Shore’s 95.3 on 73 possessions, but the early deficit and 16 total turnovers proved too much to completely overcome.
The announced attendance was 576.
Maryland-Eastern Shore returns to action Thursday at home against Maryland-Baltimore County. Loyola Chicago looks to rebound quickly, hosting Illinois State on Tuesday.
