Quinnipiac Dominates Niagara in MAAC Women’s Basketball Rout
SANBORN, N.Y. (Interstat) — The Quinnipiac women’s basketball team delivered a defensive masterclass, overwhelming Niagara from the opening tip and cruising to an 89-45 victory in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Saturday at Gallagher Center.
The Bobcats, now 20-4 overall, set the tone with suffocating pressure, forcing the Purple Eagles into 24 turnovers and converting those into 25 points. Quinnipiac held Niagara to just six points in the first quarter and seven in the third, building a lead that grew to as many as 44 points in the fourth quarter.
The most decisive stretch of the game came immediately after halftime. Leading 34-20, Quinnipiac opened the third quarter with a devastating 21-2 run over the first six and a half minutes. The surge was fueled by the Bobcats’ signature defensive intensity, which created easy transition opportunities. During the run, Quinnipiac forced five Niagara turnovers and held the Purple Eagles to 1-for-7 shooting from the field. By the time the run concluded on a Sydney Ryan three-pointer with 3:30 left in the quarter, the Bobcats led 55-22, effectively ending any remote chance of a contest.
Quinnipiac’s offensive efficiency was starkly superior. The Bobcats shot 59.2% from the field on 29-of-49 shooting, while Niagara managed just 34% on 17-of-50. Quinnipiac also dominated inside, outscoring Niagara 32-12 in the paint and attempting 19 more free throws, making 23.
Ella O’Donnell, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from Sligo, Ireland, was the catalyst for Quinnipiac. In just 26 minutes, she nearly recorded a triple-double, finishing with 12 points, nine rebounds and five assists while anchoring the defense. Her passing from the high post consistently dissected the Niagara zone.
She was complemented by a balanced scoring attack. Sydney Ryan, a 5-11 guard from Brentwood, Tennessee, led all scorers with 17 points. Jackie Grisdale added 14 points, and Ella Ryan contributed 13. Anna Foley provided strong two-way play off the bench with eight points, four rebounds, three assists, a block and three steals.
Niagara, which fell to 0-23, was led by Talia Dial’s 16 points. Jade Campbell added eight points and seven rebounds. The Purple Eagles struggled to find any offensive rhythm against Quinnipiac’s switching defenses, finishing with an offensive rating of 61.9 points per 100 possessions, a season-low for a Quinnipiac opponent.
The Bobcats’ defensive performance was comprehensive. They recorded 12 steals, limited Niagara to just four assists and consistently contested shots, holding the Purple Eagles to a 2-for-12 shooting performance in the pivotal third quarter.
The game was played before an announced crowd of 386. Quinnipiac entered as a heavy favorite, with statistical models giving them a 98.9% probability to win, and they executed accordingly from start to finish.
The victory extends Quinnipiac’s winning streak to three games as they continue to sit atop the MAAC standings. They will next host Siena on Thursday. Niagara, still in search of its first win, travels to face Manhattan on Thursday.
