Brown Defeats Dartmouth in Ivy League Women’s Basketball Contest
HANOVER, N.H. (Interstat) — The Brown women’s basketball team used a dominant defensive performance to secure a 55-41 road victory over Dartmouth in an Ivy League contest Friday night at Leede Arena.
The Bears, improving to 12-6 overall, held the Big Green to a season-low in points and a frigid shooting performance to control the game from the second quarter onward. Dartmouth fell to 9-10.
The most critical stretch of the game came in the third quarter, where Brown’s defense completely stifled the Dartmouth offense. After taking a 27-23 lead into halftime, the Bears held the Big Green to just five points in the third period on 2-of-16 shooting from the floor. Dartmouth committed six turnovers in the quarter and went scoreless for the final 6:49, allowing Brown to methodically build a 38-28 advantage heading into the final frame. That defensive lockdown proved insurmountable for a struggling Big Green squad.
Brown was led by a balanced scoring effort. Alyssa Moreland, a 5-foot-11 guard from Beverly, Massachusetts, scored 14 points and added two assists and two blocks in 25 minutes. Grace Arnolie, a 5-8 guard from Vienna, Virginia, matched that with 14 points, four assists and a block in a team-high 33 minutes. Elizabeth Nelson, a 6-foot forward from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, contributed nine points, three assists and a block.
For Dartmouth, Debra Hill, a 6-1 forward from Bedminster, New Jersey, provided a spark off the bench with eight points and a block in just 14 minutes. Cate MacDonald, a 6-1 guard from Lynnfield, Massachusetts, finished with seven points and two assists, while Olivia Austin, a 6-1 forward from Western Springs, Illinois, added six points.
Statistically, the game was defined by poor shooting and relentless defensive pressure. Both teams struggled from the field, with Brown making 21 of 59 attempts and Dartmouth managing only 15 of 53. From three-point range, the Bears were 5 of 23, and the Big Green were a dismal 4 of 28. Brown’s defense forced 24 Dartmouth turnovers, converting them into 20 points, and held a 32-16 advantage in points in the paint. The Bears also recorded 15 steals and six blocks.
Brown established an early lead, closing the first quarter on a 9-0 run to lead 17-12. Dartmouth stayed within striking distance in the second quarter, but the Bears’ third-quarter defensive stand created the separation needed to cruise to the win. Brown maintained a double-digit lead for the entirety of the fourth quarter.
The game was played in front of an announced crowd of 833. Brown entered the contest as a heavy favorite according to predictive metrics, with an 86 percent probability to win.
The victory snaps a two-game Ivy League losing streak for the Bears, who fell to Princeton and Columbia last week. Dartmouth has now lost four of its last five conference games.
Brown continues its road trip with a game at Harvard on Saturday. Dartmouth will remain at home to host Yale on Saturday.
