Northern Iowa at Murray State
Preview: Northern Iowa Panthers at Murray State Racers
MURRAY, Ky. (Interstat) — A surging Murray State squad looks to continue its dominant start when it hosts a Northern Iowa team riding a four-game win streak in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball matchup Friday at CFSB Center.
The Racers (13-2) have established themselves as an offensive powerhouse, averaging 88.1 points per game during their current eight-game win streak. Their last two victories, however, required double-overtime, including a 101-93 win over Illinois State and a 93-82 triumph over Bradley on Jan. 4. Fatigue could be a factor as they play their third game in eight days.
Murray State is led by standout forward Sharnecce Currie-Jelks, who is coming off a 43-minute, 24-point performance against Bradley. Over her last five games, she is averaging 18.4 points and has recorded multiple blocks in three contests. Guard Halli Poock, who had 26 points and 10 assists in the double-overtime win over Illinois State, provides a dynamic backcourt presence.
The visiting Panthers (8-6) have righted their season with four consecutive wins, most recently a 91-64 rout of Southern Illinois on Sunday. Their resurgence has been fueled by improved defense, holding three of their last four opponents under 65 points.
Northern Iowa will rely heavily on forward Ryley Goebel, who is in the midst of a stellar stretch. Goebel posted a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds) against Southern Illinois and is averaging 15.2 points and 8.2 rebounds over her last five games. Her defensive presence, with 10 blocks in that span, will be crucial against Murray State’s high-scoring frontcourt.
Friday’s contest is a contrast in styles: Murray State’s relentless, uptempo offense against Northern Iowa’s methodical and recently stifling defense. The Racers have been nearly unbeatable at home, while the Panthers have found a rhythm after a tough non-conference slate that included losses to Iowa State and UNLV.
The game marks the first of a home-and-home series between the teams, who will meet again in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Jan. 23.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CST Friday.
