Poock Leads Murray State Rally Past Northern Iowa

MURRAY, Ky. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a staggering momentum shift, the Murray State women’s basketball team erased a 17-point deficit to defeat Northern Iowa 75-71 in a nonconference clash on Friday night at the CFSB Center.

The visiting Panthers, leveraging a blistering first-half offensive display, appeared poised for an upset against the Racers, who entered the contest with a 13-2 record. Northern Iowa shot efficiently in the opening quarters, building a 43-26 lead by halftime. The Panthers scored 21 points in the first quarter and added 22 more in the second, while their defense stifled Murray State to just eight points in the second period.

The entire complexion of the game transformed after the intermission. Murray State, ignited by the backcourt duo of Halli Poock and Haven Ford, unleashed a 26-point third quarter, completely overwhelming Northern Iowa’s previously stout defense. The Panthers managed only 10 points in the frame, watching their commanding lead evaporate.

Poock, a 5-foot-6 guard from Waterloo, Iowa, was the catalyst for the comeback and finished as the game’s leading scorer with 30 points. She added five assists in 35 minutes of action, consistently breaking down the Panther defense and creating opportunities for herself and her teammates. Ford, a 5-6 guard from Morehead, Kentucky, provided critical support with 21 points.

Northern Iowa’s offense, which flowed so freely in the first half, struggled to find answers against Murray State’s intensified pressure after the break. Bri Robinson led the Panthers with 19 points, while Ryley Goebel added 13 points and three assists. Jenna Twedt contributed 12 points and a blocked shot.

The most important part of the game was unquestionably the third-quarter surge by the Racers. They outscored Northern Iowa by 16 points in those ten minutes, turning a double-digit halftime deficit into a manageable margin entering the final period. The Racers continued their offensive execution in the fourth, scoring 23 points to secure the victory.

Sharnecce Currie-Jelks provided a strong interior presence for Murray State with 12 points and two blocks. For Northern Iowa, Taryn Wharton scored 11 points and Lauren Walker came off the bench to add seven points in just nine minutes.

The loss dropped Northern Iowa to 8-7 on the season, while Murray State improved to 14-2. The Racers have now won five consecutive games, including recent double-overtime victories over Bradley and Illinois State.

Murray State’s comeback victory was forecasted by statistical models, which gave the Racers an 80.9 percent probability to win prior to tipoff. An announced crowd of 1,482 witnessed the dramatic turnaround.
