Arizona Women Roll Past Grambling Behind Balanced Scoring Attack
TUCSON, Ariz. (Interstat) — The Arizona Wildcats used a dominant second-quarter surge to overpower the Grambling Lady Tigers 85-64 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Sunday at McKale Center.
Arizona remained undefeated on the young season, improving to 3-0, while Grambling dropped its fourth straight game to fall to 1-4.
The game began as a tightly contested affair, with Grambling seizing early momentum. The Lady Tigers shot effectively from beyond the arc in the opening period, connecting on three 3-pointers to build a 22-13 lead after one quarter. Monica Marsh was instrumental in the early going for Grambling, scoring 10 of her team-high 16 points in the first.
The complexion of the game changed entirely in the second quarter. Arizona’s defense stiffened, and its offense found a relentless rhythm inside. The Wildcats exploded for 25 points while holding Grambling to just 11, turning a nine-point deficit into a 38-33 halftime lead. Arizona’s ability to attack the basket was the key, as they outscored Grambling 54-24 in the paint for the game.
The Wildcats continued their onslaught after halftime, matching their second-quarter output with another 25 points in the third period. The combination of interior scoring and capitalizing on Grambling’s mistakes allowed Arizona to extend its lead to 63-47 heading into the final quarter. The Wildcats scored 21 points off 16 Grambling turnovers.
Arizona’s victory was a product of balanced scoring and superior efficiency. The Wildcats shot 31 for 59 from the field, a 52.5 percent clip, while Grambling managed just 21 for 60, or 35 percent. Despite attempting nearly half as many 3-pointers as Grambling, Arizona’s focus on high-percentage shots near the basket proved decisive.
Tanyuel Welch led the Wildcats with 12 points and eight rebounds in just 19 minutes of action. She was one of five Arizona players to score in double figures, joined by Daniah Trammell and Mickayla Perdue, who each had 15 points, and Sumayah Sugapong, who added 13. Lani Cornfield orchestrated the offense masterfully, dishing out 10 assists.
For Grambling, Monica Marsh finished with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists. Douthsine Prien added nine points in the losing effort.
A crowd of 5,465 at McKale Center saw the Wildcats control the glass, outrebounding Grambling 41-31, including an 11-7 advantage on the offensive boards.
Grambling will look to snap its skid on the road against DePaul on Friday. Arizona, meanwhile, continues its homestand with a game against Northern Arizona, also on Friday.
