Albany Routs Dartmouth in Women’s Basketball Home Opener

ALBANY, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of defensive pressure and offensive efficiency, the Albany women’s basketball team secured a decisive victory over Dartmouth on Monday night at SEFCU Arena, handing the Big Green their first loss of the young season.

The final score reflected Albany’s dominance throughout the contest, a 65-41 decision in front of 1,207 fans. The Great Danes improved their record to 2-1, while Dartmouth fell to 1-1.

Albany set the tone early, closing the first quarter on a 19-2 run to establish a 19-11 lead from which Dartmouth would never recover. The Great Danes’ defense was relentless, forcing a series of turnovers that stifled the Big Green’s offensive rhythm. That defensive intensity never wavered, as Albany built a 34-21 advantage by halftime and extended its lead to 53-29 after three quarters.

The statistical story was one of stark contrast. Albany’s offense operated with precision, scoring 65 points on just 54 possessions for an offensive rating of 119.7. The Great Danes shot 49 percent from the floor, connecting on 27 of 55 attempts, and were an efficient 7 of 16 from three-point range.

Dartmouth, conversely, struggled mightily against Albany’s defensive schemes. The Big Green managed only 41 points on 58 possessions, resulting in an offensive rating of 70.9. They shot 35 percent from the field and were hampered by 16 turnovers, which Albany converted into numerous transition opportunities.

A key factor in the game was the disparity in ball movement and defensive plays. Albany dished out 12 assists and recorded 12 steals, showcasing a cohesive team defense. Dartmouth finished with only two assists and two steals, highlighting the difficulty they faced in generating clean looks and disrupting Albany’s offensive flow.

Albany’s Amaya Stewart, a sophomore from West Reading, Pennsylvania, led all scorers with 21 points in just 22 minutes of action, consistently finding gaps in the Dartmouth defense.

Fellow guard Lara Langermann of Breckerfeld, Germany, provided a significant spark for the Great Danes, contributing 12 points, including several key three-pointers, along with two assists.

The lone bright spot for Dartmouth was the performance of Olivia Austin. The junior from Western Springs, Illinois, battled inside to score a team-high 16 points and pulled down several rebounds over her 31 minutes.

Albany’s Delanie Hill, a sophomore from Charlotte, North Carolina, orchestrated the offense masterfully, distributing seven assists while anchoring the perimeter defense. Teammate Martina Borrellas of Barcelona, Spain, filled the stat sheet with eight points, four assists and a block, serving as a versatile catalyst on both ends of the floor.

Dartmouth’s Alexandra Eldredge added nine points for the Big Green.

The game was a bounce-back performance for Albany, which suffered a 64-45 road loss to Syracuse in its previous outing. Dartmouth entered the contest with momentum after a narrow 52-50 road win against Boston University this past Friday.

According to Interstat’s ELO system, Albany was the heavy favorite with a 96.90 percent probability to win, a projection the Great Danes lived up to with a comprehensive team performance.

Albany looks to continue its momentum on the road against Rhode Island this Saturday. Dartmouth returns home to face Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday, seeking to regain its footing.
