Cal Poly at Cal State Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (Interstat) — Two Big West women’s basketball teams seeking to end lengthy skids will meet Saturday when Cal State Bakersfield hosts Cal Poly at the Icardo Center.

The Roadrunners (7-21 overall) have lost eight consecutive games, while the Mustangs (3-25) enter on a 10-game losing streak. Both teams are near the bottom of the conference standings.

Cal State Bakersfield won the previous matchup this season, 62-58, at Cal Poly on Jan. 29. In that game, the Roadrunners overcame a 10-point halftime deficit.

A key player for the Roadrunners is guard Morgan Hawkins, who is coming off a 45-minute, 16-point, five-assist performance in an overtime loss to Long Beach State on Feb. 28. Hawkins has been a consistent facilitator, averaging 4.8 assists over her last four contests.

For the Mustangs, guard Nora Perez will look to build on one of her better recent outings. She scored 12 points in 22 minutes in a loss to UC San Diego on Feb. 28. Prior to that, she had been held to six points or fewer in four straight games.

Cal Poly’s offense has struggled mightily during its losing streak, failing to reach 60 points in nine of the 10 games and being held under 55 points six times. The Mustangs are 0-14 on the road this season.

Cal State Bakersfield has shown a tendency for close games, with three of its last six losses coming by five points or fewer, including two overtime defeats. The Roadrunners are 5-8 at home this season.

Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. PST on Saturday, March 7. The game will conclude the regular season for both teams ahead of the Big West Conference tournament.
