Roadrunners Upset Owls Behind Strong First Half
HOUSTON (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of both recent form and expectation, the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners delivered a defensive masterclass to upset the Rice Owls 61-52 in an American Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at Tudor Fieldhouse.
The victory, in front of 1,346 fans, snapped a two-game losing streak for UTSA and handed the powerhouse Owls just their fourth loss of the season. Rice entered the contest as overwhelming favorites, having defeated UTSA by 10 points just over a month prior and sporting a 26-4 record. The Roadrunners improved to 14-15.
The most important part of the game was a dominant first-half defensive performance by Texas-San Antonio that built an insurmountable lead. The Roadrunners held Rice to a mere six points in the second quarter, turning a 19-15 lead after one period into a commanding 41-21 halftime advantage. That 20-point cushion proved critical as Rice mounted a sustained, but ultimately insufficient, comeback attempt in the second half.
UTSA’s defense was the story from the opening tip. The Roadrunners disrupted Rice’s offensive flow, forcing 12 first-half turnovers and contesting nearly every shot. The Owls, who average over 70 points per game, were held to a season-low in first-half scoring. The Roadrunners, meanwhile, found an efficient offensive rhythm, shooting 50 percent from the field in the first half and getting contributions across the roster.
Mia Hammonds, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from Cibolo, Texas, led UTSA with 14 points in 29 minutes. Idara Udo, a 6-1 forward from Plano, added 12 points and a game-high nine defensive rebounds, anchoring the interior defense. The backcourt duo of Ereauna Hardaway (eight points, five assists) and Adriana Robles (nine points, three assists) managed the game effectively against Rice’s pressure.
Rice, which shot a frigid 28 percent from the field for the game, was led by Aniah Alexis’s 15 points. The Owls showed life after halftime, outscoring UTSA 31-20 in the second half. A 12-5 run in the third quarter, fueled by five points from Alexis and a 3-pointer from Victoria Flores, cut the deficit to 13 points. The Owls continued to chip away in the fourth, closing to within nine points on multiple occasions, the last coming on a Flores 3-pointer with 27 seconds remaining.
However, UTSA’s early work had created too large a margin to overcome. Every Rice push in the second half was met with a critical response from the Roadrunners. When the Owls trimmed the lead to 45-33 late in the third, Udo answered with a jumper. When they got it to 49-40 in the fourth, Hammonds converted a layup. UTSA’s composure, particularly in handling Rice’s full-court pressure in the final minutes, sealed the victory.
Rice’s Shelby Hayes and Victoria Flores each scored eight points, with Hayes adding two assists and a block. Louann Battiston contributed six points, five assists and a block for the Owls.
The loss is a surprising blemish for Rice as it heads toward the postseason, while for Texas-San Antonio, it stands as a signature victory and a testament to a game plan executed with precision, particularly on the defensive end where they built their decisive early lead.
