Washington State at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Interstat) — A surging Santa Clara women’s basketball team looks to continue its dominant season when it hosts struggling Washington State in a West Coast Conference matchup Thursday night at Leavey Center.

The Broncos (17-5) have won five of their last six games, including a 93-59 rout of Seattle last Thursday. They boast one of the conference’s most potent offenses, averaging over 80 points per game during that stretch.

Santa Clara guard Ashley Hawkins, who torched Washington State for 26 points, six rebounds and eight assists in the first meeting, leads the charge. She is averaging 15.8 points and 6.6 assists over her last seven contests.

They face a Washington State team mired in a difficult season. The Cougars (4-18) have lost three straight and 12 of their last 14. Their lone bright spot has been the consistent play of guard Eleonora Villa, who scored 29 points in the Jan. 10 loss to Santa Clara. Villa averages 17.6 points over her last seven games.

In that previous high-scoring affair, Santa Clara outlasted Washington State 98-92. The Broncos will aim for a more controlled performance on their home floor, where they are 9-2 this season. Washington State, 1-10 on the road, seeks an upset to reverse its fortunes.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. PST. Santa Clara hosts Pepperdine on Saturday, while Washington State returns home to face Gonzaga.
