Santa Clara Broncos Dominate Washington State Cougars in High-Scoring Affair
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive efficiency and defensive pressure, the Santa Clara Broncos overwhelmed the Washington State Cougars 102-71 in a West Coast Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at a sparsely attended Leavey Center.
The game was effectively decided in a dominant first half, where Santa Clara’s relentless attack built a lead the struggling Cougars could never challenge. The Broncos, improving to 18-5 overall, shot 52.8% from the floor in the opening half and forced 12 Washington State turnovers, converting them into easy transition opportunities to take a 52-35 lead into the break.
Santa Clara guard Ashley Hawkins, a 5-foot-6 sophomore from Long Beach, California, orchestrated the victory with a game-high 20 points and seven assists, consistently breaking down the Cougar defense. Her backcourt mate, Eleonora Villa of Washington State, countered with a team-high 18 points and five assists, but the Broncos’ depth proved too much.
The most pivotal sequence of the game occurred late in the first quarter, extinguishing an early Washington State spark. After the Cougars’ Alex Covill completed a three-point play to pull within 21-19 with just over a minute remaining, Santa Clara closed the period on an 8-0 run. The burst was capped by a Hawkins 3-pointer at the buzzer, assisted by Kylee Fox, pushing the Broncos’ lead to 29-21 and establishing a momentum they would never relinquish. That run typified the night, as every Washington State attempt to rally was met with an immediate and decisive Santa Clara response.
The Broncos’ offensive balance was on full display. Alongside Hawkins, forward Delainey Miller scored 15 points, reserve Ava Schmidt added 14, and Maia Jones contributed 12 points and two blocks. Santa Clara assisted on 14 of its 38 made field goals and connected on 13 3-pointers, showcasing a fluid, unselfish system.
Washington State, which fell to 4-19, was hampered by 19 turnovers and a stagnant offense that managed only six assists. Mackenzie Chatfield joined Villa in double figures with 11 points. The Cougars shot just 40.3% from the field and were outscored 32-21 in a decisive third quarter that removed any lingering doubt about the outcome.
Statistically, the disparity was stark. Santa Clara scored 102 points on just 79 possessions, an elite offensive rating of 129.0, while Washington State managed a rating of 87.6. The Broncos also tallied 14 steals to the Cougars’ six, highlighting the defensive intensity that fueled their transition game.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Santa Clara, which also won a tighter 98-92 contest in Pullman on Jan. 10. The Broncos now look ahead to a home matchup against Pepperdine on Saturday. Washington State, mired in a losing streak, returns home to face Gonzaga the same day, searching for answers after a defeat that underscored the gap between them and the conference’s upper tier.
The announced attendance was 441.
