Gonzaga at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Interstat) — A clash of West Coast Conference women’s basketball contenders is set for Sunday when the surging Santa Clara Broncos host the Gonzaga Bulldogs at Leavey Center.

The Broncos (12-3) enter conference play with momentum, having won seven straight games, including a dominant 94-65 victory over Seattle on Tuesday. They are led by standout forward Sophie Glancey, who is averaging 20 points and 7.5 rebounds over her last two contests. Her 29-point, 8-rebound performance in a win at Grand Canyon on Dec. 14 highlights her potential for a breakout game.

Gonzaga (10-5) counters with its own potent scorer in Lauren Whittaker. The guard has been on a tear, averaging 20 points per game over her last six outings. She dropped 22 points in just 22 minutes in the Bulldogs’ most recent win, a 75-52 rout of Pepperdine on Dec. 30. Whittaker’s scoring prowess will be central to Gonzaga’s hopes for a road upset.

This matchup pits Santa Clara’s high-powered offense, which has scored 84 or more points in four of its last five games, against a Gonzaga team that has found its defensive footing during a four-game win streak, holding opponents to an average of 58.3 points in that span.

The Broncos’ strong start marks them as a potential challenger in the WCC, while the perennial power Bulldogs aim to reassert their conference dominance. The outcome could provide early clarity in the league standings.

Sunday’s game tips off at 2 p.m. PST. Following this contest, Santa Clara will hit the road for a game at San Francisco on Thursday, Jan. 8. Gonzaga’s next game is at home against Portland on Saturday, Jan. 10.
