Mercer Holds Off Jackson State for Road Victory
JACKSON, Miss. (Interstat) — Propelled by a dominant first-quarter offensive explosion, the Mercer women’s basketball team secured a 78-68 victory over Jackson State on Wednesday afternoon at the Lee Williams Athletic Center.
The Bears set the tone early, erupting for 28 points in the opening period while holding the Lady Tigers to 18. Mercer connected on a flurry of three-pointers and capitalized on defensive stops to build a lead they would not relinquish. The Bears maintained a double-digit advantage for much of the contest, weathering several Jackson State pushes in the second half to close out the win.
Mercer’s offensive efficiency was the story of the game. The Bears scored 78 points on 74 possessions, translating to an offensive rating of 105.7. They shot an efficient 48 percent from the field, hitting 26 of 54 attempts, and were a sharp 50 percent from beyond the arc, making 7 of 14 three-pointers. While Mercer struggled somewhat from the free-throw line, converting 19 of 27, their overall shooting prowess proved decisive.
Jackson State, conversely, was hampered by offensive struggles. The Lady Tigers managed 68 points on 77 possessions, an offensive rating of 87.8. They shot just 37 percent from the floor, making 23 of 63 shots, and were limited to 4-of-12 shooting from three-point range. Jackson State was more efficient at the charity stripe, making 18 of 22 free throws, but could not overcome their overall shooting deficit.
Defensively, Mercer’s pressure was relentless. The Bears recorded 11 steals and forced 14 Jackson State turnovers, while committing 13 of their own. Mercer also dished out 11 assists compared to just five for the Lady Tigers, highlighting superior ball movement. Jackson State won the battle on the offensive glass, grabbing 10 rebounds to Mercer’s six, but it was not enough to overcome the Bears’ defensive intensity.
Ariana Bennett led all scorers for Mercer, contributing 19 points in just 23 minutes of action. The 6-foot-1 forward from Edwardsville, Illinois, also added five rebounds and three blocked shots, anchoring the Bears’ defense. Micah O’Dell of St. Louis, Missouri, provided a steady hand, playing 36 minutes and finishing with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists.
Nahawa Diarra, a guard from Barcelona, Spain, turned in a strong all-around performance for Mercer with 12 points, eight rebounds and two assists in 32 minutes. Talia Kemp from Orlando, Florida, orchestrated the offense with a team-high five assists to go with nine points.
For Jackson State, Mikayla Brown of Dallas, Texas, recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Rhema Pegues, from Olive Branch, Mississippi, came off the bench to lead the Lady Tigers in scoring with 14 points. Jaileyah Cotton of Bardstown, Kentucky, and Pierre-Noelle Tcheuhchoua each added 10 points in the losing effort.
The victory improves Mercer’s season record to 3-2, while Jackson State falls to 1-3. The game was played before an announced crowd of 379.
Mercer’s win defied the pregame projections from Interstat’s ELO system, which had given Jackson State an 81.80 percent probability of victory. The Bears will look to build on this momentum when they travel to face Georgia Southern on Saturday. Jackson State will aim to regroup at home against Arkansas State on Sunday.
