Richmond Dominates La Salle in Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. (Interstat) — The Richmond Spiders, showcasing their depth and defensive intensity, turned a competitive first quarter into a decisive rout, overwhelming the La Salle Explorers 92-58 in an Atlantic 10 Conference women’s basketball game Sunday at Robins Center.
A crowd of 2,268 watched the Spiders improve to 23-6 overall and solidify their standing near the top of the conference. La Salle fell to 15-12.
The game’s pivotal shift occurred in the second quarter. After a back-and-forth opening period that ended with La Salle holding a surprising 21-16 lead, Richmond unleashed a devastating 28-point second quarter. The Spiders’ defense catalyzed the offense, forcing a series of Explorers turnovers and converting them into easy transition opportunities. Richmond outscored La Salle 28-12 in the frame, taking a 44-33 lead into halftime that they would only expand.
The most important part of the game was unquestionably that second-quarter surge, which saw Richmond flip an early deficit into a double-digit advantage they would never relinquish. The Spiders’ pressure disrupted La Salle’s offensive flow, and their own scoring came in efficient waves from multiple sources.
Richmond’s offensive attack was balanced and potent. Aneisha Scott, a 5-foot-5 guard from Minneapolis, came off the bench to lead all scorers with 20 points in just 20 minutes of play. Forward Maggie Doogan of Broomall, Pennsylvania, added 16 points, while Rachel Ullstrom contributed 12 points and three assists. Rayne Wright provided a significant spark with 11 points in only 10 minutes.
La Salle was led by Ashleigh Connor of Pittsburgh, who finished with 15 points, five assists and a blocked shot. Joan Quinn added 11 points for the Explorers, who shot poorly from the field and could not match Richmond’s pace or precision after the first quarter.
The statistical disparity told the story of Richmond’s dominance. The Spiders scored 24 points off La Salle turnovers, compared to 14 for the Explorers. Richmond also controlled the interior, outscoring La Salle 36-28 in the paint. The Spiders’ bench outscored their counterparts by a wide margin, led by Scott’s explosive performance.
After halftime, Richmond continued to apply pressure, extending their lead to 64-52 by the end of the third quarter. Any hope of a La Salle comeback was extinguished in the final period as the Spiders closed the game on a 28-6 run, holding the Explorers to just six points in the fourth quarter.
The victory was a resounding response for Richmond, which entered the game following a narrow overtime loss at George Washington earlier in the week. For La Salle, the defeat halted a two-game winning streak and underscored the challenge of competing with the conference’s elite on the road.
Richmond, projected by analytics to have a 97% probability of winning, lived up to that expectation with a comprehensive performance. The Spiders next host Rhode Island on Wednesday. La Salle looks to regroup on the road at VCU, also on Wednesday.
