Morehead State Eagles Defeat Southeast Missouri State Redhawks in Ohio Valley Conference Matchup
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (Interstat) — A dominant opening quarter and a relentless defensive effort propelled the Morehead State women’s basketball team to a decisive 71-57 victory over Southeast Missouri State in an Ohio Valley Conference matchup Thursday night at the Show Me Center.
The Eagles, who led wire-to-wire, established their authority immediately. Kate Dike won the opening tip and Laura Toffali converted a layup just five seconds into the game, setting the tone for a blistering first quarter. Morehead State’s defense was suffocating from the start, forcing Southeast Missouri State into a shot-clock violation on its first possession and generating multiple early turnovers. This defensive pressure fueled a 15-2 opening run, capped by back-to-back three-pointers from Landon Forbes. The Eagles shot efficiently and capitalized on Redhawks mistakes, closing the first quarter with a commanding 21-12 lead.
The most critical phase of the game followed in the second quarter when Southeast Missouri State mounted its only serious challenge. Sparked by Raissa Nsabua, who scored eight points in the period, the Redhawks chipped away at the deficit. A 9-2 run, punctuated by a Kearra Jones hook shot, brought Southeast Missouri State within two points at 23-21. The home crowd came to life as the Redhawks’ defense briefly disrupted the Eagles’ rhythm. However, Morehead State weathered the storm. A key steal and subsequent free throws from Forbes halted the momentum, and the Eagles managed to take a 33-31 lead into halftime despite being outscored 19-12 in the quarter.
Any hope of a Redhawks comeback was extinguished in the third quarter as Morehead State reasserted control with a 19-12 period. The Eagles’ backcourt duo of Forbes and Violet McNece took over, combining for 13 points in the quarter. Their scoring, coupled with continued defensive harassment, stretched the lead back to nine points. The Eagles forced six turnovers in the quarter, converting them into easy transition opportunities and steadily pulling away.
The fourth quarter saw Morehead State maintain its comfortable advantage. Southeast Missouri State never got closer than seven points as the Eagles answered every basket. McNece and Forbes continued to find scoring opportunities, while Marie Sepp orchestrated the offense effectively. Morehead State’s defense sealed the win by forcing 20 total Redhawks turnovers, which they converted into 24 points.
Forbes, a guard from Wichita, Kansas, and McNece, from Chesterfield, Missouri, each scored 18 points to lead the Eagles. Forbes added three assists and a game-high five steals. Sepp, the point guard from Tallinn, Estonia, directed the offense with nine assists. Dike, a forward from Kyiv, Ukraine, provided a significant interior presence with 14 points and two blocks in just 17 minutes of play. Toffali, of Villasanta, Italy, contributed 11 points.
The Redhawks were led by a game-high 24 points from Nsabua, a guard from Ottawa, Canada. Jones, from Madison, Wisconsin, added 13 points. Their efforts were not enough to overcome a poor shooting night and the constant pressure from the Eagles’ defense.
Morehead State improved to 15-9 overall and strengthened its position in the OVC standings. Southeast Missouri State fell to 8-14. The Eagles won their fourth consecutive game and completed a regular-season sweep of the Redhawks, having also won the previous meeting on Jan. 10.
Morehead State finished the game shooting 45.3% from the field and 40% from three-point range. Southeast Missouri State shot 40.8% overall but was hampered by 5-of-15 shooting from beyond the arc and 12-of-20 from the free-throw line. The Eagles dished out 15 assists to the Redhawks’ eight and recorded 15 steals.
Morehead State travels to face Tennessee-Martin on Saturday. Southeast Missouri State will host Southern Indiana the same day.
