TCU Dominates Houston in Lopsided Big 12 Women’s Basketball Matchup

FORT WORTH, Texas (Interstat) — In a commanding display of both offensive efficiency and defensive pressure, the Texas Christian Lady Frogs delivered a decisive 90-45 victory over the Houston Cougars in a Big 12 Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Dickies Arena.

The game was never in doubt as the 21-3 Lady Frogs, coming off a narrow road loss to Texas Tech, quickly established their dominance. The 7-15 Cougars, who had snapped a four-game skid with a win over Cincinnati last Sunday, were overwhelmed from the opening tip, struggling to find any offensive rhythm against a relentless TCU squad.

The most critical phase of the contest unfolded in the second quarter, where TCU effectively put the game out of reach. Leading 19-14 after the first period, the Lady Frogs erupted for a 25-point quarter, outscoring Houston by 14. This surge was fueled by a stifling defense that forced eight Houston turnovers in the first half, which TCU converted into 16 points. Offensively, TCU operated with precision, shooting 59% from the floor for the game and dominating inside with 54 points in the paint. By halftime, the lead had ballooned to 44-25, and the Cougars, shooting just 30.4% from the field in the half, faced a deficit too large to challenge.

TCU’s offensive execution was nearly flawless, scoring 90 points on 75 possessions for an offensive rating of 120.0. In stark contrast, Houston managed only 45 points on the same number of possessions, an offensive rating of 60.3 that underscored their struggles. The Lady Frogs also held significant advantages in field goal percentage (57.6% to 30.4%), three-point percentage (38.9% to 16.7%), and assists (10 to 8).

Olivia Miles, the star guard from Phillipsburg, New Jersey, led all scorers with 25 points in just 30 minutes, adding six assists. She spearheaded the TCU attack, consistently breaking down the Houston defense. She was complemented by a potent inside-outside duo: Marta Suárez of Oviedo, Spain, scored 24 points, while Donovyn Hunter added 15 points. The Lady Frogs’ size also made a major impact, as 6-foot-7 Kennedy Basham of Phoenix contributed three blocks and 6-foot-7 Clara Silva of Faro, Portugal, anchored the interior with seven points and three assists.

Houston’s offense was consistently stymied. Kierra Merchant, a hometown guard from Houston, led the Cougars with 12 points, and forward Amirah Abdur-Rahim of Marietta, Georgia, added eight points and a block. However, the team committed 16 turnovers and connected on only 2 of 12 attempts from beyond the arc. Their 20 points in the paint paled in comparison to TCU’s interior dominance.

The Lady Frogs continued to extend their lead after halftime, winning the third quarter 22-13 and the fourth 24-7. The margin allowed TCU coach Mark Campbell to utilize his bench extensively in the final period, with reserve Taliyah Parker of Oklahoma City contributing seven quick points.

With the win, Texas Christian improves to 21-3 overall and solidifies its position in the upper tier of the Big 12. Houston falls to 7-15. The teams are scheduled to meet again in Houston on Wednesday, Feb. 18.

The announced attendance was 2,968. The combined score of 135 points fell under the betting over/under line of 131.5. According to Interstat’s ELO system, TCU entered the game with a 99.30 percent probability to win, a forecast the Lady Frogs fulfilled with a comprehensive performance on both ends of the floor.
