Binghamton Holds Off New Hampshire in America East Contest

VESTAL, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a grinding America East Conference defensive struggle defined by lengthy scoring droughts and missed opportunities, the Binghamton Bearcats used a decisive second-quarter surge and clutch late free throws to secure a 50-42 victory over the New Hampshire Wildcats in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Thursday night at the Events Center.

The game, played before an announced crowd of 1,337, saw both teams struggle offensively from the opening tip. New Hampshire (6-13, 0-6 America East) opened the game with a burst, hitting three early 3-pointers, two from Maggie Cavanaugh, to build a 15-9 lead after the first quarter. However, the Wildcats’ offense collapsed entirely in the second period, managing just six points on 3-of-14 shooting while committing five turnovers.

Binghamton (13-6, 4-2) seized control during that stretch. Trailing 17-12 early in the quarter, the Bearcats embarked on a 14-0 run over a span of more than five minutes. Guard Bella Pucci, a redshirt junior from Rochester, New York, was the catalyst, scoring seven points during the run, including a traditional three-point play and two free throws. The Bearcats outscored New Hampshire 17-6 in the quarter to take a 26-21 lead into halftime, a margin they would not relinquish.

The Wildcats showed resilience after the break, opening the third quarter with a 7-2 spurt to tie the game at 28 on a 3-pointer by Elizabeth Lavoie. The teams traded baskets, and another Lavoie three later in the quarter kept New Hampshire within a single possession at 35-33. But the Wildcats could never regain the lead, as their shooting woes returned at critical moments.

The most important sequence of the game came in the fourth quarter with Binghamton clinging to a 40-37 lead. After a New Hampshire turnover, Kaia Goode hit a transition jumper to extend the lead to five. Following a Wildcats timeout, Pucci delivered the dagger, sinking a 3-pointer from the wing off a Goode assist to push the Bearcat advantage to eight points with 6:38 remaining. New Hampshire never got closer than six points the rest of the way.

Binghamton sealed the game at the free-throw line, making 8 of 10 attempts in the final quarter. For the game, the Bearcats attempted 15 free throws, making 12, while New Hampshire went just 4 of 5 from the line, a stark 16-point disparity in a game decided by eight.

Pucci led all scorers with 20 points, adding two assists. Forward Kendall Bennett of Philadelphia provided a crucial interior presence, scoring 13 points, grabbing a game-high 11 defensive rebounds, and blocking three shots. Leah Middleton added eight points for the Bearcats.

New Hampshire was led by Lavoie, a sophomore from Derry, New Hampshire, who scored 12 points. Cavanaugh, a junior guard, also finished with 12 points. The Wildcats’ defense was active, tallying nine steals and seven blocks, with senior forward Eva DeChent of Westchester, New York, recording four blocks and three steals. However, the team’s offensive inefficiency proved insurmountable. New Hampshire shot just 30.2% from the field (16 of 53) and 24% from 3-point range (6 of 25), while committing 13 turnovers.

Binghamton’s offense was only marginally better, shooting 32.7% overall (17 of 52) and 26.7% from deep (4 of 15), but their ability to draw fouls and convert at the stripe provided the necessary cushion. The Bearcats also won the rebounding battle 38-34 and scored 20 points in the paint to New Hampshire’s 18.

The loss extends New Hampshire’s losing streak to five games, all in conference play. The Wildcats will look to break the skid quickly, traveling to face Albany on Saturday. Binghamton, which entered the game as a heavy favorite according to advanced metrics, rebounds from a road loss to UMBC and will host Maine on Saturday as they continue to pursue the top of the America East standings. The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Durham, New Hampshire, on Feb. 26.
