Kentucky Rallies Past Louisville Behind Strack’s Double-Double
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (Interstat) — A dominant third-quarter defensive performance by the Kentucky Wildcats proved to be the decisive factor in a 72-62 victory over the rival Louisville Cardinals in a women’s NCAA Division I basketball game Saturday afternoon at a raucous KFC Yum! Center.
In a contest defined by runs and defensive pressure, the Wildcats remained undefeated on the season, improving to 7-0, while the Cardinals fell to 4-2.
The game was a tight, back-and-forth affair for the first 20 minutes. Kentucky held a narrow 37-35 lead at halftime, with both teams trading baskets and the lead changing hands multiple times. The Wildcats’ Clara Strack and Teonni Key, along with Louisville’s Tajianna Roberts and Laura Ziegler, were all instrumental in the first-half offensive output for their respective teams.
The narrative of the game shifted entirely in the third quarter. Kentucky’s defense clamped down, holding Louisville to a mere six points on 3-of-16 shooting from the floor. The Wildcats also forced four Cardinal turnovers in the period, disrupting their offensive rhythm entirely.
“I thought our defensive intensity in the third quarter was the difference in the game,“ a Kentucky team spokesperson said in a postgame statement. “We communicated well, contested shots, and made it difficult for them to run their sets.“
While the defense stifled Louisville, Kentucky’s offense methodically built a commanding lead. The Wildcats outscored the Cardinals 20-6 in the quarter, turning their two-point halftime advantage into a 57-41 lead heading into the final period. The run was a collective effort, with Key, Strack, and Amelia Hassett all contributing key baskets.
Louisville mounted a valiant comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, exploding for 21 points. Roberts and Ziegler led the charge, but the deficit from the third quarter proved too large to overcome. Every time the Cardinals threatened to cut the lead to single digits, Kentucky answered with a critical basket, often from Strack in the post or Tonie Morgan on the drive.
Kentucky’s victory was anchored by a balanced and efficient offensive attack and a significant advantage in interior defense. The Wildcats shot 52.5% from the field, compared to Louisville’s 39.7%. While both teams had nearly identical possessions, Kentucky’s superior shooting efficiency was a key metric in the outcome.
Strack, a 6-foot-5 center from Buffalo, New York, was a force for the Wildcats, recording a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in 36 minutes of action. She also added three assists and two blocks. Key, a 6-4 forward from Cary, North Carolina, was equally impactful, scoring 17 points, grabbing eight rebounds, and swatting four Louisville shots.
Morgan, the Wildcats’ floor general from Tallahassee, Florida, orchestrated the offense masterfully, finishing with a game-high 19 points and seven assists. Jordan Obi added 10 points and five rebounds for Kentucky.
The Wildcats also dominated the paint defensively, registering eight total blocks as a team, led by Key’s four.
For Louisville, Roberts, a 5-10 guard from San Diego, carried the scoring load with a game-high 22 points. Ziegler, a 6-2 forward from Herley, Denmark, also recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. However, the Cardinals were hampered by their third-quarter drought and an inability to consistently counter Kentucky’s size and length inside.
The game was played in front of an energized crowd of 10,442, underscoring the intensity of the in-state rivalry. The win extends Kentucky’s strong start to the season, which has seen them win every game by double digits. The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for Louisville.
Kentucky now looks ahead to a trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico, where they will face Maryland on Wednesday. Louisville will return to action at home against Eastern Illinois on Friday.
