Penn at Delaware State

LEIPSIC, Del. (Interstat) — The Penn women’s basketball team used a dominant first half to secure a 63-41 victory over Delaware State on Monday night at Memorial Hall.

The Quakers improved to 2-0 on the young season, while the Hornets fell to 1-2.

Penn set the tone early, opening the game on a 14-3 run and never looking back. Their defense was stifling, holding Delaware State to just six points in the second quarter. By halftime, the Quakers had built a commanding 36-17 lead, a deficit from which the Hornets could not recover.

A key to the victory was Penn’s control of the boards. The Quakers outrebounded Delaware State 44-30, with Tina Njike and Katie Collins each pulling down 12 rebounds. Penn’s work on the offensive glass, where they secured nine rebounds, led to numerous second-chance opportunities.

Njike led all scorers with 15 points to complete her double-double. Collins added 8 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 assists. For Delaware State, Mahogany Cottingham and Liliana Harrison each scored 8 points. Cottingham also contributed 3 assists.

While both teams committed a high number of turnovers—Penn with 19 and Delaware State with 14—the Quakers’ superior shooting proved decisive. Penn shot 44.2 percent from the floor, connecting on 23 of 52 attempts. Delaware State struggled offensively, making only 15 of 59 shots for a 25.4 percent field goal percentage.

The Hornets showed a brief spark after halftime, outscoring Penn 17-16 in the third quarter, but the Quakers’ lead was insurmountable. Penn’s defense tightened again in the final period, limiting Delaware State to just seven points to close out the win.

Penn finished the game shooting 4 of 14 from three-point range and 13 of 16 from the free-throw line. Delaware State was 3 of 9 from beyond the arc and 8 of 9 from the line.

The game was played in front of an announced attendance of 175.

Penn’s next contest is on the road against Drexel on Wednesday. Delaware State will look to rebound at home against Bloomfield College, also on Wednesday.
