Villanova Dominates Xavier in Lopsided Big East Women’s Basketball Contest

CINCINNATI (Interstat) — The Villanova Wildcats delivered a defensive masterclass and unleashed a decisive third-quarter surge to overwhelm the Xavier Musketeers 78-38 in a Big East Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Cintas Center.

The most important part of the game was a dominant 37-point third quarter by Villanova that turned a competitive halftime lead into a historic rout. After leading 34-14 at the break, the Wildcats erupted offensively while their relentless defensive pressure completely smothered Xavier. Villanova outscored the Musketeers 37-15 in the period, shooting efficiently and capitalizing on a cascade of Xavier turnovers to put the game far out of reach.

The victory improved Villanova to 20-5 overall and marked its seventh win in eight games. Xavier fell to 11-14.

From the opening tip, Villanova’s defensive intensity set the tone. The Wildcats forced 20 turnovers, converting them into 31 points, and held Xavier to a frigid 27.7% shooting from the field. The Musketeers managed only eight points in the paint and posted an offensive rating of 57.7 points per 100 possessions, a testament to Villanova’s stifling defense.

Villanova guard Jasmine Bascoe, a junior from Milton, Canada, orchestrated the offense with precision, scoring a game-high 18 points and dishing out seven assists in 27 minutes. Her backcourt leadership was pivotal during the game-breaking third-quarter run.

Sophomore forward Brynn McCurry of Sparta, New Jersey, provided a major spark off the bench, contributing 15 points and four assists in just 19 minutes. Her scoring burst was central to Villanova pulling away. Ryanne Allen, a junior from Perkasie, Pennsylvania, added 11 points, all of which came during the Wildcats’ explosive second-half performance.

Xavier, struggling to find any offensive rhythm, was led by Meri Kanerva. The junior guard from Espoo, Finland, scored 13 points but needed 36 minutes to do so, emblematic of her team’s difficulties against Villanova’s defensive schemes.

The Wildcats established control early, leading 15-8 after a first quarter defined by ragged offense from both sides. They extended the margin to 20 points by halftime, holding Xavier to just six points in the second quarter. The third quarter, however, transformed a comfortable lead into a blowout. Villanova shot 14 of 23 from the field in the period, assisted on nine of their made baskets, and forced seven Xavier turnovers.

Villanova’s balance was evident as they compiled 16 assists on 33 made field goals, outrebounded Xavier 48-30, and recorded 16 steals. The Wildcats also connected on 11 three-pointers while limiting Xavier to 7-of-27 shooting from beyond the arc.

The game was a rematch of a Jan. 8 meeting won by Villanova 67-50. This result was far more lopsided, aligning with pregame analytics that gave the Wildcats a 94.3% probability to win.

Villanova now looks ahead to a road test at Creighton on Sunday. Xavier will attempt to regroup before hosting Seton Hall next Wednesday.

An announced crowd of 1,069 watched as Villanova methodically dismantled the Musketeers, with the third-quarter explosion serving as the definitive, game-sealing sequence that underscored the Wildcats’ superior execution on both ends of the floor.
