South Carolina Dominates Tennessee in SEC Women’s Basketball Showdown
COLUMBIA, S.C. (Interstat) — In a display of overwhelming dominance, the South Carolina Gamecocks delivered a statement victory, routing the Tennessee Lady Volunteers 93-50 in a Southeastern Conference women’s basketball matchup Sunday at a sold-out Colonial Life Arena.
The contest, played before an announced crowd of 16,206, was never in doubt as the Gamecocks seized control from the opening tip and never relented. South Carolina’s suffocating defense and surgical offensive efficiency smothered Tennessee, handing the Lady Volunteers their most lopsided loss of the season.
The most critical phase of the game was its inception. South Carolina established its authority immediately, opening the game on a 7-0 run and closing the first quarter with a 25-18 lead. The early tone was set by a stifling defensive effort that forced Tennessee into a frantic pace and contested shots. The Lady Volunteers opened the game shooting just 28% from the field in the first period, a harbinger of a long afternoon. This early defensive stand provided the foundation for the blowout, as Tennessee never recovered its offensive rhythm, while South Carolina’s confidence and lead only grew.
The Gamecocks separated the game decisively in the second quarter, outscoring Tennessee 22-14 to take a 47-32 advantage into halftime. Any hope of a Lady Volunteers rally was extinguished in the third quarter, where South Carolina put the game completely out of reach with a 24-9 period, stretching the lead to 71-41. The Gamecocks cruised through the final quarter, matching their offensive output while Tennessee managed only nine points for the second consecutive period.
South Carolina’s offensive execution was nearly flawless. The Gamecocks shot a scorching 69.2% from the field, making 36 of 52 attempts. They were equally effective from the free-throw line, converting 16 of 20. Tennessee, by stark contrast, struggled mightily, shooting 28.1% overall and just 22.7% from three-point range on 44 attempts. The Lady Volunteers turned the ball over 18 times, which South Carolina converted into 23 points.
Joyce Edwards, the Camden, South Carolina, native, led all scorers and was the engine for South Carolina. The 6-foot-3 forward finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals in 30 minutes, continuing a run of stellar performances. She was complemented by a balanced and potent attack. Ta’Niya Latson added 21 points, while Raven Johnson orchestrated the offense with 13 points and seven assists. Madina Okot dominated the interior, recording a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Tessa Johnson chipped in 14 points.
For Tennessee, Talaysia Cooper was a bright spot amidst the struggle, leading her team with 17 points, five rebounds and five assists. Janiah Barker added 10 points and six rebounds, but the Lady Volunteers could not find consistent scoring beyond that duo. The team’s offensive rating of 69.1 on 72 possessions underscored the futility of the day against a locked-in South Carolina defense.
With the victory, South Carolina improved to 24-2 overall and solidified its position atop the SEC. The Gamecocks have now won four consecutive games since a Jan. 22 overtime loss at Oklahoma. Tennessee fell to 15-6, suffering its second loss in three games following a hard-fought overtime win at Georgia on Thursday.
South Carolina next travels to face LSU on Saturday. Tennessee returns home to host Missouri on Thursday.
