Xavier at Connecticut
HARTFORD, Conn. (Interstat) — The undefeated and top-ranked Connecticut Huskies host the Xavier Musketeers in a Big East women’s basketball matchup Wednesday at the XL Center, presenting a stark contrast in conference trajectories.
UConn (21-0, 10-0 Big East) continues its dominant march through the season, having won every game by at least 25 points since late December. The Huskies are coming off a 92-52 road victory over Seton Hall, where balance and depth were again on display. Blanca Quinonez led the way with 16 points, five rebounds and four assists in just 27 minutes, emblematic of the efficient performances that have defined UConn’s season. The Huskies’ average margin of victory in conference play is a staggering 48.1 points.
Xavier (10-10, 3-7) arrives in Hartford mired in a three-game losing streak, most recently a 65-52 home loss to Georgetown. The Musketeers’ hopes hinge largely on the standout play of guard Mariyah Noel, who has been a bright spot during the skid. Noel is averaging 19.4 points over her last seven games, including a 30-point, five-assist effort in a narrow loss to St. John’s on Jan. 17. She scored 20 points and grabbed six rebounds in the loss to Georgetown.
The previous meeting this season underscores the challenge ahead for Xavier. On Nov. 30, UConn routed the Musketeers 104-39 in Cincinnati, a game that was never in doubt. Containing UConn’s offensive arsenal, which features Quinonez, Sarah Strong (17 points vs. Seton Hall) and veteran Azzi Fudd (14 points vs. Seton Hall), will be the primary task for a Xavier defense that has allowed an average of 68.3 points in its last three losses.
For UConn, the game represents another step toward a perfect regular season and the top seed in the upcoming Big East tournament. For Xavier, it is a daunting opportunity to disrupt the nation’s top team and gain a crucial signature win to bolster its postseason resume.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST. UConn’s next game is a non-conference showdown with Tennessee on Sunday, while Xavier returns home to face Butler.
