Huskies Dominate Musketeers, Remain Unbeaten

HARTFORD, Conn. (Interstat) — The top-ranked Connecticut Huskies delivered a performance of overwhelming force, extending their perfect season with a 97-39 demolition of the Xavier Musketeers in a Big East women’s basketball game Wednesday night before a crowd of 10,244 at the XL Center.

The most significant stretch of the contest arrived in the third quarter, where the Huskies transformed a substantial lead into an insurmountable one. Leading 43-24 at halftime, Connecticut unleashed a 31-point third-quarter barrage, outscoring Xavier by 24 points in the frame. The period was defined by a relentless defensive pressure that fueled a seamless transition attack. The Huskies forced a series of Musketeer turnovers and missed shots, converting them into easy baskets at the other end in a devastating display of their depth and athleticism.

Freshman guard Allie Ziebell, named the game’s top star, spearheaded the onslaught. The Neenah, Wisconsin, native caught fire from beyond the arc, hitting multiple three-pointers during the quarter as part of her game-high 34-point performance. She played just 29 minutes but was a perfect catalyst for the runaway period, showcasing the scoring punch that has become a hallmark of her recent play.

Sarah Strong, the standout forward from Durham, North Carolina, provided a dominant interior complement, finishing with 25 points, three assists and a block. The Huskies’ backcourt orchestrated the rout with precision, as Ashlynn Shade contributed 12 points and six assists, KK Arnold added five points and six assists, and Kayleigh Heckel dished out eight assists to go with six points.

The game was effectively decided by the time the fourth quarter began, with Connecticut leading 74-31. The Huskies continued to execute, with Ziebell adding to her total and reserves like Jana El Alfy, who finished with seven points and a block, seeing extended action.

For Xavier, the struggle was evident from the opening tip. The Musketeers managed only 17 points in the first quarter and saw their offense grind to a near halt thereafter, scoring just seven points in both the second and third quarters before adding eight in the final period. Meri Kanerva of Espoo, Finland, led Xavier with 11 points, while Mariyah Noel of Kansas City, Kansas, added 12. Savannah White of Saint Paul, Minnesota, contributed six points and two blocks, but the Musketeers were overwhelmed by Connecticut’s size, speed, and defensive intensity.

The victory improved Connecticut’s record to 22-0 overall and maintained its pristine mark in conference play. The Huskies have now won their last three games by an average margin of 48 points. Xavier fell to 10-11 on the season and has lost four of its last five contests.

The statistical dominance was comprehensive. Connecticut’s offensive execution in the third quarter was the pivotal chapter, but the Huskies controlled every facet throughout. The lopsided result was in line with pregame projections, though the combined point total fell short of the betting over/under line of 128.5.

Connecticut now looks ahead to a high-profile non-conference showdown against Tennessee on Sunday. Xavier returns home to face Butler on Sunday, seeking to rebound from its second decisive loss to the Huskies this season.
