George Mason at Davidson

Preview: George Mason Patriots at Davidson Wildcats

DAVIDSON, N.C. (Interstat) — A pivotal Atlantic 10 women’s basketball clash is set for Wednesday night as the Davidson Wildcats host the surging George Mason Patriots at Belk Arena.

Both teams enter with momentum and nearly identical records in a crowded conference race. Davidson (14-7 overall) sits just ahead of George Mason (13-6) in the standings, making this a critical matchup for postseason positioning.

The Patriots arrive on a six-game winning streak, their last loss coming in overtime to Princeton on Dec. 20. Their defense has been stifling during the run, holding opponents to an average of 52.2 points per game. They are coming off a 57-48 road win at Saint Bonaventure on Jan. 21.

George Mason is powered by guard Zahirah Walton, who has been a consistent offensive force. She is averaging 18.4 points per game over her last seven contests, including a 25-point performance in a win over Loyola Chicago on Jan. 14. In the most recent win over Saint Bonaventure, Walton logged 36 minutes and contributed 14 points and two assists.

Davidson, which defeated VCU 66-51 at home on Jan. 24, counters with its own standout in guard Charlise Dunn. She scored 17 points in the win over the Rams and has shown versatile production all season, including a 13-point, 13-rebound double-double at Loyola Chicago on Dec. 31. Dunn averages 12.1 points per game.

The Wildcats have been strong at home, boasting a 9-2 record at Belk Arena this season. Their offense, which exploded for 91 points in a triple-overtime loss at Richmond on Jan. 10, will be tested by George Mason’s formidable defense.

This contest features two of the A-10’s top guards in Walton and Dunn, and the outcome will likely hinge on which star can better dictate the tempo. A George Mason win would knot their overall records and signal a serious threat in the conference, while a Davidson victory would solidify its hold near the top of the league.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Eastern on Wednesday, Jan. 28.
