George Mason Clamps Down on Davidson for Road Win
DAVIDSON, N.C. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by relentless pressure and forced mistakes, the George Mason Patriots grinded out a 62-51 victory over the Davidson Wildcats in an Atlantic 10 women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Belk Arena.
The Patriots, now 14-6 overall, used a stifling defensive performance to build a steady lead and withstand a late push from the Wildcats, who fell to 14-8. George Mason forced 21 Davidson turnovers, converting them into 20 points, while committing only 12 of their own. The Patriots also tallied 11 steals, more than tripling Davidson’s total of three.
The game’s pivotal stretch came late in the first quarter, setting a tone of defensive dominance. After Davidson’s Charlise Dunn opened the scoring with a 3-pointer, the Wildcats’ offense stalled against George Mason’s aggressive scheme. The Patriots closed the opening period on a 13-3 run, fueled by active hands and transition opportunities. A steal by Mary Amoateng led to a 3-pointer from Jada Brown. Another theft by Zahirah Walton resulted in a fast-break layup for Walton herself, pushing the lead to 17-13 by quarter’s end.
George Mason extended its advantage in the second quarter, leading by as many as 11 points. The Patriots’ backcourt of Kennedy Harris and Amoateng facilitated the offense, combining for nine assists by halftime, while Davidson managed only a single assist as a team in the first half. The Wildcats shot just 7 of 27 from 3-point range for the game, a testament to the Patriots’ perimeter defense.
Davidson, led by the inside-outside duo of Katie Donovan and Charlise Dunn, made several attempts to rally. Donovan finished with a game-high 18 points, while Dunn added 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. A Dunn 3-pointer early in the fourth quarter cut the George Mason lead to 40-37, marking the closest the Wildcats had been since the first quarter.
The Patriots responded immediately with a critical 6-0 spurt. Consecutive layups by Hawa Komara, the second off a feed from Louis Volker, steadied George Mason and pushed the lead back to nine with just over six minutes remaining. Davidson would get no closer than five points the rest of the way, as the Patriots’ defense clamped down once more, forcing key turnovers in the final minutes to seal the road win.
George Mason’s offense was balanced, with Zahirah Walton scoring 14 points and adding two blocks and two steals. Kennedy Harris, a 5-foot-6 guard from Hampton, Virginia, contributed 12 points and five assists. Amoateng, a 5-6 guard from Baltimore, filled the stat sheet with nine points, four assists and four steals. Jada Brown also chipped in nine points.
Beyond Dunn’s double-double, Davidson received six points from Kyra Bruyndoncx of Antwerp, Belgium. The Wildcats won the rebounding battle 38-32, including a 13-8 edge on the offensive glass, but could not overcome their ball-handling woes and a stark disparity in assists, finishing with only three compared to George Mason’s 11.
The Patriots shot 43.4% from the field and 40% from 3-point range, while Davidson was held to 38.5% shooting overall. Both teams struggled at the free-throw line, with George Mason making 8 of 15 and Davidson converting 4 of 8.
The win marked George Mason’s fifth consecutive victory in Atlantic 10 play. The Patriots will look to continue their momentum when they host Saint Louis on Saturday. Davidson will aim to rebound on the road at Saint Joseph’s on Sunday.
An announced crowd of 786 attended the game at Belk Arena. According to Interstat’s ELO system, George Mason entered with a narrow 51% probability to win.
