Omaha at South Dakota State

OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — A stark contrast in Summit League fortunes will be on display Wednesday night when the struggling Omaha Mavericks visit the powerhouse South Dakota State Jackrabbits in a women’s basketball matchup.

The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. CST at Frost Arena in Brookings, South Dakota.

South Dakota State (16-5, 5-1 Summit) enters as one of the conference’s top teams, having won five of its last six games. The Jackrabbits are coming off a 76-63 road victory at Missouri-Kansas City on Saturday, led by a dominant 25-point, 8-rebound performance from standout forward Brooklyn Meyer.

Meyer has been on a tear, averaging 22.7 points over her last three contests, including a 31-point outburst at North Dakota on Jan. 21. She posted 10 points and six rebounds in the first meeting this season against Omaha, a 65-36 Jackrabbits win in Omaha on Jan. 3.

Omaha (2-20, 0-7) is mired in a 10-game losing streak and seeks its first conference victory. The Mavericks are coming off a 67-39 home loss to South Dakota last Thursday, where they shot just 23.2% from the field. Their last win was a non-conference victory over Briar Cliff on Dec. 27.

A bright spot for the Mavericks has been the defensive presence of forward Avril Smith. Over her last five games, Smith has averaged 9.2 rebounds and 3.6 blocks, including a 16-rebound, 5-block effort at Oral Roberts on Jan. 17 and a 6-block performance against South Dakota. Her ability to protect the rim will be critical against Meyer and the efficient Jackrabbits offense.

South Dakota State has won 14 consecutive games in the series. Omaha’s last victory over the Jackrabbits came in February 2016.

Following this game, South Dakota State will prepare for a key road matchup at rival South Dakota on Saturday. Omaha will host Missouri-Kansas City on Saturday, still in search of its first Summit League win of the season.
