South Dakota State Dominates Omaha in Summit League Women’s Basketball

BROOKINGS, S.D. (Interstat) — The South Dakota State women’s basketball team delivered a dominant performance Wednesday night, overwhelming Omaha 85-41 in a Summit League contest at Frost Arena.

The game was effectively decided by a commanding second-quarter surge from the Jackrabbits, who turned a narrow first-quarter tie into a runaway victory in front of 2,389 fans. After a 14-14 deadlock in the opening period, South Dakota State outscored Omaha 21-8 in the second quarter to take a 35-22 halftime lead. The Jackrabbits never relented, extending their advantage with a 22-13 third quarter and a 28-6 fourth-quarter blitz.

The most important part of the game was South Dakota State’s decisive 21-2 run that spanned the end of the first quarter and the majority of the second. With the score tied at 14 late in the first, the Jackrabbits closed the period on a 7-0 spurt, capped by a Brooklynn Felchle layup with just over a minute remaining. They then opened the second quarter with 14 of the next 16 points, turning a competitive contest into a 35-16 lead. This stretch, fueled by defensive pressure and efficient offense, established a tone of complete control from which Omaha could not recover.

Brooklyn Meyer, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Larchwood, Iowa, led all scorers with 18 points for South Dakota State. She added three assists and a block in just 25 minutes of action. Fellow post player Brooklynn Felchle, a 6-3 freshman from Bismarck, North Dakota, provided a significant spark off the bench with 12 points and a block in 14 minutes.

Madison Mathiowetz added 13 points for the Jackrabbits, while Mahli Abdouch orchestrated the offense with a game-high six assists to go with nine points. Katie Vasecka and Ellie Colbeck each contributed nine points in the balanced attack.

For Omaha, which has struggled offensively throughout the season, Regan Juenemann was the lone player to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points. Elsa Vedral and Leekaya Burke-Perryman added nine and eight points, respectively.

The victory improved South Dakota State’s record to 17-5 overall and solidified its position near the top of the Summit League standings. The Jackrabbits shot efficiently from the field while their defense consistently disrupted Omaha’s offensive sets, forcing numerous turnovers and contested shots.

Omaha, which fell to 2-21, continued to search for answers during a difficult season. The Mavericks have now lost 10 consecutive games since their last victory on Dec. 27. Their offensive woes were starkly evident in the fourth quarter, where they managed only six points against South Dakota State’s reserves.

The game was a rematch of a Jan. 3 meeting in Omaha, which South Dakota State won 65-36. Wednesday’s result followed a similar pattern, with the Jackrabbits using their size, depth, and defensive intensity to overwhelm the Mavericks.

South Dakota State will next face a major conference test, traveling to face rival South Dakota on Saturday. Omaha returns home to host Missouri-Kansas City on Saturday, looking to snap its extended losing streak.
