Saint Joseph’s Holds Off La Salle Rally for A-10 Road Win
PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — In a tense, back-and-forth city rivalry game defined by defense and critical final-minute plays, the Saint Joseph’s Hawks held off a late charge to defeat the La Salle Explorers 69-65 in an Atlantic 10 Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Tom Gola Arena.
The victory completed a regular-season sweep for Saint Joseph’s, which also defeated La Salle 69-60 on Jan. 10, and improved the Hawks to 14-6 overall. La Salle fell to 11-10.
The most pivotal sequence unfolded in the game’s final 10 seconds with Saint Joseph’s clinging to a 67-65 lead. After La Salle’ Ashleigh Connor converted two free throws to cut the deficit to two, the Explorers immediately fouled Saint Joseph’s guard Rhian Stokes with six seconds remaining. Stokes, a freshman from Ewing, New Jersey, calmly sank the first free throw to extend the lead to three but missed the second. La Salle’s Aryss Macktoon secured the defensive rebound, giving the Explorers a final chance to force overtime.
On the ensuing possession, La Salle’s Joan Quinn, who had a team-high 18 points, attempted a potential game-tying 3-pointer from the wing. The shot missed, and Saint Joseph’s secured the defensive rebound as time expired, sealing the four-point victory.
The game was a defensive struggle throughout, with both teams shooting an identical 26 for 58 from the field. Saint Joseph’s found a slight edge from beyond the arc, making 9 of 21 3-point attempts compared to La Salle’s 6 for 17. The Hawks also capitalized marginally more on turnovers, scoring 16 points off 13 La Salle giveaways.
Saint Joseph’s built its lead with consistent scoring across all four quarters, posting 16, 16, 19 and 18 points, respectively. La Salle, meanwhile, was hampered by a slow start, scoring only 14 points in the opening period, and a third-quarter lull where they managed just 13 points before a 20-point fourth-quarter rally that ultimately fell short.
Balance was key for the Hawks, who placed four players in double figures. Gabby Casey led the way with 14 points, while Emily Knouse and Rhian Stokes each contributed 11. Kaylinn Bethea added 8 points and was instrumental defensively with a game-high four steals.
La Salle was powered by its standout duo. Joan Quinn, a guard from Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, filled the stat sheet with her 18 points, while also contributing two assists and two steals. Senior forward Kiara Williams of Palm Bay, Florida, provided a strong interior presence, finishing with 17 points and a game-high 30 minutes played. Ashleigh Connor facilitated the offense with a game-high eight assists to go with 13 points.
The game was played before an intimate crowd of 385 at La Salle’s on-campus arena. The win keeps Saint Joseph’s in the upper tier of the Atlantic 10 standings as the conference season nears its midpoint. The Hawks will look to build on the momentum when they host Davidson on Sunday. La Salle, seeking to return to the .500 mark in conference play, travels to face Duquesne on Saturday.
According to Interstat’s ELO system, Saint Joseph’s entered the game with an 81.7% probability of winning, a projection the Hawks narrowly fulfilled in a contest that was in doubt until the final buzzer. The narrow margin underscored the competitive nature of the Philadelphia Big 5 and Atlantic 10 rivalry, where defensive intensity and execution in the closing moments proved decisive.
