Eagles Soar Past Vikings in Big Sky Conference Matchup
PORTLAND, Ore. (Interstat) — The Eastern Washington Eagles used a dominant second quarter to build a commanding lead and never looked back, cruising to an 81-63 victory over the Portland State Vikings in a Big Sky Conference women’s basketball game Thursday night at the Stott Center.
The Eagles, who evened their overall record at 10-9, outscored the Vikings 23-15 in the second period to turn a narrow three-point lead into a double-digit advantage they would not relinquish. Eastern Washington maintained its offensive efficiency after halftime, matching its second-quarter output with another 23 points in the third to put the game out of reach. The Vikings, who fell to 5-13, were held to 15 points in each of the first three quarters before a late push in the fourth.
Eastern Washington’s attack was balanced and potent, led by a standout performance from Elyn Bowers. The sophomore guard from Pinedale, Wyoming, scored 21 points in just 28 minutes, showcasing efficiency and playmaking with three assists. She was instrumental in the Eagles’ pivotal second-quarter run, scoring seven points during the period.
Bowers was far from alone. The Eagles’ frontcourt duo of Jaecy Eggers and Ella Gallatin provided consistent scoring and rebounding. Eggers, a 6-foot-2 freshman from Woodinville, Washington, contributed 14 points off the bench, while Gallatin, a sophomore from Snohomish, Washington, added 16 points. Veteran forward Kourtney Grossman of Billings, Montana, also chipped in 16 points and was a force on the boards and in the opening tip, which she won to set the early tone.
Portland State struggled to find consistent offense outside of a stellar individual effort from Kyleigh Brown. The sophomore guard from Silverton, Oregon, delivered a game-high 25 points, battling throughout to keep her team within striking distance. She was aggressive, drawing multiple fouls and getting to the free-throw line, but received limited scoring support. Cici Ellington, a hometown product from Portland, was the only other Viking to reach double figures, finishing with 11 points and a blocked shot.
The most important stretch of the game unfolded in the latter half of the second quarter. Leading 21-19, Eastern Washington ignited a decisive 12-2 run over a four-minute span. The surge was fueled by defensive stops and a diversified attack. Bowers knocked down a jumper, Grossman connected from beyond the arc, and Madeline Gibbs of Aurora, Colorado, capped the run with a mid-range shot to extend the lead to 33-21. Portland State could not counter, managing only a single field goal from Laynee Torres-Kahapea during that critical stretch, and entered halftime trailing 41-30.
Eastern Washington effectively slammed the door in the third quarter. After Portland State’s Brown opened the second-half scoring, the Eagles responded with a 9-2 spurt. A three-pointer from Paris Kirk of Kelowna, Canada, followed by consecutive baskets from Bowers and Eggers, pushed the lead to 50-34, and the Vikings never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
The Eagles’ defense was a key factor, disrupting Portland State’s rhythm and forcing 18 turnovers, which they converted into 22 points. Eastern Washington also controlled the interior, outscoring the Vikings 42-28 in the paint and outrebounding them 45-35.
The victory moves Eastern Washington to 3-3 in Big Sky play as they prepare for a quick turnaround at Sacramento State on Saturday. Portland State, now 1-5 in the conference, will look to regroup when it hosts Idaho on Saturday.
