Davidson Wildcats Dominate Fordham Rams in Atlantic 10 Women’s Basketball
DAVIDSON, N.C. (Interstat) — The Davidson Wildcats used a dominant defensive performance and a balanced scoring attack to pull away from the Fordham Rams for a 74-50 victory in an Atlantic 10 Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at Belk Arena.
A crowd of 770 saw Davidson improve to 12-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while Fordham fell to 8-9 and 0-5 in the A-10.
The game’s decisive stretch came late in the second quarter, turning a competitive contest into a comfortable Davidson lead by halftime. After Fordham’s Lakresha Edwards hit a 3-pointer to pull the Rams within 27-24 with 4:56 remaining in the half, the Wildcats closed the quarter on an 11-4 run. The surge was fueled by forward Edina Strausz, who scored six consecutive points during the run, including a layup and a free throw after being fouled with 53 seconds left. That sequence gave Davidson a 38-28 advantage at the break, a lead it would not relinquish.
Strausz, a 6-foot-3 sophomore from Budapest, Hungary, led all scorers with 17 points in just 19 minutes off the bench, adding four assists. Her efficiency inside was a microcosm of Davidson’s overall offensive success, which posted an offensive rating of 111.0 points per 100 possessions compared to Fordham’s 80.2.
The Wildcats extended their lead throughout the second half, methodically outpacing a Fordham offense that struggled with consistency. Davidson’s defense was relentless, forcing 17 Rams turnovers and converting them into 18 points. The Wildcats also controlled the interior, outscoring Fordham 38-28 in the paint and grabbing 14 offensive rebounds to Fordham’s seven.
Davidson’s international roster showcased its depth. Alongside Strausz, forward Ines Garcia Monje of Spain contributed 10 points, and guard Elena Alvarez Castellanos, also from Spain, chipped in seven points and four assists. Australian forward Charlise Dunn added 13 points and a block.
Fordham was led by guard Tia Morgan of Chicago, who finished with 12 points. Edwards, from Chilliwack, Canada, and Emma Wilson-Saltos of the Bronx, New York, each added 10 points for the Rams, who shot just 42.9% from the field and a paltry 42.9% from the free-throw line.
The Wildcats set the tone early, answering an initial burst from Fordham. The Rams scored the game’s first four points, but Davidson responded with a 20-14 quarter, taking a lead it would hold for the final 38 minutes. The Wildcats then won the third quarter 19-9 to put the game out of reach, leading 57-37 entering the final period.
Davidson’s victory was its third in the last four games, while Fordham’s loss extended its skid to five consecutive defeats, all in conference play. The Rams have struggled offensively during the slump, failing to reach 60 points in four of those five losses.
The Wildcats will look to continue their momentum on the road at La Salle on Sunday. Fordham aims to secure its first A-10 win when it returns home to host Saint Bonaventure, also on Sunday.
