Thompson’s Double-Double Leads Boise State Past Nevada

BOISE, Idaho (Interstat) — Tatum Thompson recorded a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds, and the Boise State Broncos used a strong first half to pull away from the Nevada Wolf Pack for a 74-62 victory in a Mountain West Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday afternoon at Taco Bell Arena.

The Broncos, improving to 10-4 overall, built a 41-30 halftime lead behind efficient offense and never let the Wolf Pack within single digits in the second half. Nevada dropped to 4-9 with the loss.

Thompson, a 6-foot-1 forward from Woodinville, Washington, was the catalyst, adding five assists and shooting 9 for 19 from the field in 37 minutes. Her performance was a sharp rebound from a two-point outing in a loss at San Diego State just 11 days prior. She was supported by Natalie Pasco, who scored 19 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Dani Bayes, who added 16 points and four assists.

Nevada’s Gabby Ramos, a 5-10 guard from Clovis, California, led all scorers with 21 points, along with five rebounds, three assists and a block. Kendra Hicks contributed 12 points and Skylar Durley added 10 points and six rebounds for the Wolf Pack.

The game’s decisive stretch came in the opening quarter. After Nevada’s Ahrray Young hit an early 3-pointer, Boise State responded with a 13-2 run to seize control. Thompson was central to the surge, scoring on a putback, drawing fouls and facilitating for teammates. Bayes capped the run with a 3-pointer off a Thompson assist, giving the Broncos a 15-5 lead they would not relinquish.

Boise State extended its lead to 21-15 by the end of the first quarter and continued to apply pressure in the second. The Broncos’ offense operated smoothly, shooting 50% from the field in the first half while holding Nevada to 36.7% shooting. The Wolf Pack struggled particularly from beyond the arc, making just 3 of 16 attempts for the game.

Nevada showed fight after halftime, outscoring Boise State 18-14 in the third quarter behind eight points from Ramos. A Ramos 3-pointer followed by a Skylar Durley layup cut the deficit to 48-45 with 5:09 left in the period. However, the Broncos answered immediately with a 7-0 run, featuring a layup from Thompson and a Pasco 3-pointer, to push the lead back to 55-45 and effectively stifle the rally.

The Wolf Pack could not mount another sustained challenge in the fourth quarter, as Boise State maintained its double-digit advantage by answering every Nevada basket. The Broncos shot 47.5% from the field for the game and were an efficient 8 of 9 from the free-throw line. Nevada won the battle on the offensive glass, 12-9, and forced 13 turnovers, but was hampered by its own 11 turnovers and a 38.3% shooting night.

Statistically, Boise State’s offensive efficiency was key. The Broncos scored 74 points on 69 possessions for an offensive rating of 106.8, while Nevada managed just 62 points on 68 possessions for a rating of 91.1. The Broncos also enjoyed a significant advantage from the 3-point line, outscoring Nevada 24-9 from deep.

A crowd of 2,032 watched the New Year’s Eve contest. Both teams return to conference play Saturday. Boise State hosts Grand Canyon, while Nevada welcomes Utah State.
