Seattle at Santa Clara
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Interstat) — A surging Santa Clara women’s basketball team will look to extend its winning streak when it hosts struggling Seattle on Tuesday night at Leavey Center.
The Broncos (11-3) have won five consecutive games, most recently a 68-46 home victory over San Diego on Sunday. They are led by guard Ashley Hawkins, who has been a consistent facilitator. Over her last three games, Hawkins has averaged 11.3 points and 8.3 assists, including an 11-assist performance at North Texas on Dec. 21.
Seattle (4-7) enters on a three-game skid, including an 85-66 loss at Pacific on Sunday. The Redhawks have struggled offensively in defeats, scoring 51, 62 and 66 points in their recent losses. Forward Tamia Stricklin has been a bright spot, averaging 14.5 points and 6.5 rebounds over her last two contests. She posted 13 points and eight rebounds in the loss to Pacific.
The Broncos have dominated at home this season, boasting a 6-1 record in Santa Clara. Their offense has been potent, scoring 80 or more points in six games, including a 125-point outburst against Simpson on Dec. 6.
Seattle, which has yet to win a true road game (0-5), will need to contain Santa Clara’s balanced attack and find more consistent scoring beyond Stricklin and Sydnie Rodriguez, who had 14 points against Pacific.
This non-conference matchup is the first of a home-and-home series between the teams, who will meet again in Seattle on Jan. 22.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST.
