Glancey Leads Broncos to Dominant Home Win Over Redhawks

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Interstat) — The Santa Clara Broncos used a dominant first-half performance and a game-high 22 points from Sophie Glancey to cruise past the Seattle Redhawks 94-65 in a nonconference women’s basketball game Tuesday night at Leavey Center.

The Broncos, improving to 12-3, never trailed and built a commanding 50-27 lead by halftime, effectively putting the game out of reach. Seattle, which fell to 4-8, could not recover from the early deficit despite a competitive first quarter.

The most important stretch of the game came late in the first quarter and throughout the second, when Santa Clara transformed a narrow two-point lead into a 23-point halftime advantage. With Seattle trailing just 17-15 late in the opening period, the Broncos closed the quarter on a 10-2 run, capped by a Glancey 3-pointer with five seconds remaining. That momentum carried into the second quarter, where Santa Clara outscored Seattle 23-12, shooting efficiently and forcing eight Redhawks turnovers in the frame. The Broncos’ defense held Seattle to just 12 points in the quarter on 5-of-15 shooting, while their offense, led by Glancey and Ashley Hawkins, consistently found easy baskets in transition and in the half-court.

Glancey, a 6-foot-2 sophomore from Boise, Idaho, was the focal point, scoring her 22 points in just 24 minutes on the floor. She was complemented by a balanced Broncos attack. Hawkins, a 5-6 guard from Long Beach, California, orchestrated the offense with 14 points and 7 assists. Aniya Hooker, a 5-8 guard from Lynnwood, Washington, added 14 points, while Kylee Fox of Richland, Washington, chipped in 10 points and 4 assists.

For Seattle, Ella Brubaker of University Place, Washington, led the way with 15 points in 31 minutes. Tamia Stricklin, a 6-0 guard from Renton, Washington, added 17 points, 3 assists and 2 blocks. Andjela Bigovic, a 6-5 freshman from Herceg Novi, Montenegro, contributed 13 points and 4 assists, and Lucija Milkovic of Sibenik, Croatia, scored 10 points.

The game began with Santa Clara setting an immediate, aggressive tone. Ava Schmidt won the opening tip and, after an early exchange, Fox hit a 3-pointer for the game’s first points. Seattle stayed close early behind the shooting of Stricklin and Brubaker, tying the game at 12-12 midway through the first. However, the Broncos’ defensive pressure, which generated 13 steals, began to take its toll. A key sequence saw Schmidt steal the ball and Hawkins convert a layup to spark the decisive first-quarter run.

Santa Clara’s lead ballooned to as many as 31 points in the second half as they consistently answered any modest Seattle push. The Broncos shot 50 percent from the field for the game and assisted on 24 of their 36 made baskets, showcasing a fluid offensive system. Seattle, meanwhile, was hampered by 22 turnovers, which Santa Clara converted into 28 points.

The Broncos also controlled the interior, outscoring Seattle 46-28 in the paint and blocking 8 shots, led by Maia Jones’ 4 blocks. Jones, from Tasman, New Zealand, also added 6 points and 4 rebounds.

The victory extended Santa Clara’s winning streak to three games as they head into West Coast Conference play. The Broncos have now won 10 of their last 11 games, with the only loss in that span coming to then-Stanford. Seattle, which has lost three of its last four, continues to search for consistency ahead of its own conference schedule.

A crowd of 331 at the Leavey Center watched the Broncos dominate from start to finish, a performance that aligned with statistical projections that gave Santa Clara a 99.4 percent probability to win.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Seattle on Jan. 22 in a WCC matchup. Up next, Santa Clara opens conference play at Loyola Marymount on Friday, while Seattle returns home to host Gonzaga, also on Friday.
