North Texas at Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. (Interstat) — Two teams seeking momentum to open American Athletic Conference play will meet when the North Texas Mean Green visit the Florida Atlantic Owls in a women’s basketball matchup Tuesday night.

Both teams enter the contest with identical 6-6 overall records. The game at FAU Gymnasium marks the conference opener for each squad.

North Texas looks to snap a three-game skid, most recently falling 84-72 to Santa Clara on Dec. 21. The Mean Green have relied on forward Tionna Lidge, who nearly posted a double-double in that loss with 11 points and nine rebounds in 19 minutes. Over her last five games, Lidge is averaging 6.4 points and 5.2 rebounds.

Florida Atlantic arrives with some confidence after a 60-57 road victory over Florida International on Dec. 20. The Owls were powered by guard Haley Walker, who scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds in that win. Walker has been a key contributor, averaging 7.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game this season.

The matchup pits North Texas’s defense against an FAU team that has struggled offensively at times, scoring 63 points or fewer in six games this season. The Mean Green will need to contain Walker and find consistent scoring beyond Lidge, with guard Jazzy Owens-Barnett (13 points vs. Santa Clara) as a potential source.

For the Owls, protecting their home court is critical as they face a challenging early conference slate. Their victory over FIU showed an ability to win a close game, a trait they will need against a North Texas team familiar with tight contests, having played in two overtime games this season.

The game tips off at 7 p.m. EST and is the first of two regular-season meetings between the programs, with a rematch scheduled for Jan. 31 in Denton, Texas.
