Tennessee at UCLA

LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — A marquee non-conference women’s basketball matchup is set for Sunday as the UCLA Bruins host the Tennessee Lady Volunteers at Pauley Pavilion.

Both teams enter with strong early-season records. UCLA is 7-1, its only loss a 76-65 defeat at Texas on Nov. 26. The Bruins are coming off a dominant 89-59 victory over Duke on Thursday, led by 23 points from Gabriela Jaquez and 20 from Charlisse Leger-Walker.

Tennessee (5-1) arrives in Los Angeles on a five-game winning streak since a season-opening 80-77 loss at North Carolina State. The Lady Volunteers are fresh off an 88-35 rout of Coppin State last Sunday, where guard Nya Robertson scored a game-high 32 points.

The game features a contrast in tempo. Tennessee has suffocated opponents with its defense during its streak, while UCLA’s high-powered offense has consistently scored over 85 points in its wins. The matchup between Tennessee’s backcourt of Robertson and Talaysia Cooper, who dished nine assists in the last game, and UCLA’s trio of Jaquez, Leger-Walker and Kiki Rice will be pivotal.

This contest serves as a major test for both sides before conference play begins next month. For Tennessee, it is the second leg of a challenging West Coast road trip following a game at Stanford on Wednesday. UCLA looks to defend its home court and solidify its top-10 ranking against a perennial power.
