Texas Tech Women Dominate Baylor in Big 12 Matchup

LUBBOCK, Texas (Interstat) — In a commanding wire-to-wire performance, the Texas Tech Lady Raiders emphatically avenged an earlier season loss to the Baylor Lady Bears with an 87-56 victory in a Big 12 Conference women’s basketball game Wednesday night at United Spirit Arena.

Fueled by a dominant first half and a combined 45 points from Bailey Maupin and Snudda Collins, Texas Tech improved to 24-4 overall and solidified its position atop the conference standings. Baylor, which had edged Texas Tech 60-61 in Waco back in December, fell to 22-6 with the defeat in front of a crowd of 5,020.

The most important part of the game was Texas Tech’s immediate and overwhelming establishment of control in the first quarter, which set a decisive tone from which Baylor never recovered. The Lady Raiders opened the game on a 12-2 run, capitalizing on early Baylor misses and turnovers. While Baylor’s Darianna Littlepage-Buggs worked to keep her team close with early baskets, Texas Tech’s offensive execution was superior. The Lady Raiders closed the opening period on a 10-3 burst, capped by a Gemma Nunez layup and a Taliah Scott three-pointer for Baylor, to take a 22-15 lead.

That momentum exploded into a second-quarter onslaught that effectively decided the contest. Texas Tech outscored Baylor 26-13 in the frame, shooting with efficiency and forcing the Lady Bears into a series of costly mistakes. The period featured a critical sequence where Baylor turnovers on consecutive possessions led directly to five quick Texas Tech points, including a three-pointer from Maupin, pushing the lead to 30-19. Collins, coming off the bench, provided a massive spark, scoring 11 points in the quarter. Her step-back jumper at the halftime buzzer, assisted by Nunez, sent the Lady Raiders into the locker room with a commanding 48-28 advantage.

Baylor, which entered the game with a 67.4% win probability according to Interstat’s ELO system, had no answer for the deficit. The Lady Bears struggled to find consistent offense outside of Littlepage-Buggs and Scott, who each finished with 13 points. The team’s shooting woes and 21 turnovers, many leading directly to Texas Tech scores, proved insurmountable.

The Lady Raiders’ lead never dipped below 18 points in the second half. Baylor showed brief signs of life with a 7-0 run early in the third quarter, but Texas Tech promptly answered with a 7-0 run of its own, snuffing out any hope of a comeback. The home team’s balance was on full display as Maupin, a guard from Gruver, Texas, poured in 22 points, while Collins, a forward from Brookhaven, Mississippi, added 23 points in just 19 minutes of action. Nunez, from Almeria, Spain, orchestrated the offense with 10 points and three assists, and Sarengbe Sanogo of Paris, France, controlled the paint with 10 points and relentless rebounding.

Texas Tech’s defense was equally instrumental, with Sidney Love of San Antonio contributing six assists and a steal, and the team collectively forcing Baylor into a difficult shooting night. Baylor’s Kyla Abraham provided a bright spot off the bench with eight points and a block in 11 minutes.

The victory was a statement for Texas Tech, which had been installed as a slim 1.5-point pregame favorite. The combined score of 143 points sailed over the over/under line of 128.5. For Baylor, the loss snapped a two-game winning streak and highlighted ongoing challenges in conference play against top-tier opponents.

Texas Tech looks to carry this momentum into a road matchup at Colorado on Saturday. Baylor returns home to host Arizona on Saturday, seeking to regroup before a pivotal stretch run.
