Wright State Routs Oakland in Horizon League Women’s Basketball

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (Interstat) — Breezie Williams scored 24 points and the Wright State Raiders used a dominant third-quarter surge to pull away from the Oakland Golden Grizzlies for a 62-44 victory in a Horizon League women’s basketball game Saturday at the Athletics Center O’rena.

The Raiders, who swept the season series after a 61-57 win in December, improved to 9-18 overall. Oakland fell to 8-17.

The game’s decisive stretch came in the third quarter, where Wright State transformed a tight contest into a commanding lead. Leading 27-17 at halftime, the Raiders erupted for 24 points in the period while holding Oakland to just 12. Williams, a 5-foot-5 guard from Canton, Ohio, was the catalyst, scoring 12 of her game-high total during the quarter. Her personal 8-0 run, featuring two three-pointers and a layup off a steal, stretched a 29-23 lead to 37-23 and forced an Oakland timeout with 3:35 remaining in the quarter.

The Raiders’ defense was equally instrumental, generating 10 of Oakland’s 18 total turnovers in the second half and converting them into 21 points for the game. Wright State finished with 11 steals and five blocks.

Williams added seven rebounds and three assists in 28 minutes. She was supported by Claire Henson, who scored 11 points, and Ellie Magestro-Kennedy, who contributed nine points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Grace Okih anchored the interior with six points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

Oakland was led by Makenzie Luehring with 14 points and Filippa Goula with 13. Karinna Trotter was a force on the glass, pulling down a game-high 16 rebounds to go with five points and a block for the Golden Grizzlies.

The first half was a defensive struggle, with both teams shooting under 30% from the field. Wright State led 12-8 after one quarter and slowly built its lead to 10 by the break, thanks in part to holding Oakland to just nine second-quarter points.

Oakland’s offensive struggles were pervasive. The Golden Grizzlies shot 29.6% from the field (16 of 54) and 28.6% from three-point range (6 of 21). They managed only 18 points in the paint and six points off Wright State turnovers.

The Raiders, while not efficient themselves at 38.7% shooting, controlled the game’s tempo and capitalized on Oakland’s mistakes. They attempted five more field goals and outscored Oakland 21-6 in points off turnovers.

The fourth quarter saw Oakland outscore Wright State 15-11, but the Golden Grizzlies never cut the deficit below 18 points after the Raiders’ third-quarter explosion.

Wright State, which entered the game with a projected win probability of just 28.7% according to Interstat’s ELO system, secured its second straight victory following a win at Detroit on Thursday. Oakland has now lost three consecutive games.

Wright State next hosts Milwaukee on Wednesday. Oakland travels to face Fort Wayne the same night.
