Wright State Pulls Away From Detroit for Horizon League Win
DETROIT (Interstat) — The Wright State Raiders used a balanced scoring attack and a decisive third-quarter surge to secure a 78-61 victory over the Detroit Titans in a Horizon League women’s basketball game Thursday night at Calihan Hall.
In a matchup of teams near the bottom of the conference standings, the Raiders improved to 8-18 overall while the Titans fell to 5-19. The result defied the pregame statistical projections, which heavily favored the home team.
The game was closely contested through the first half. Wright State built a narrow 41-34 halftime lead behind a strong second quarter where they outscored Detroit 22-16. The Raiders’ offense flowed through multiple contributors early, with Claire Henson, Ellie Magestro-Kennedy and Lauren Scott all finding scoring opportunities.
The most important part of the game arrived immediately after halftime. Wright State emerged from the break with renewed defensive intensity, holding Detroit to just 11 points in the third quarter. The Raiders stretched their seven-point halftime lead to 16 points by the start of the fourth, effectively putting the game out of reach. This defensive stand, limiting Detroit’s offensive options and creating transition chances, was the pivotal stretch that allowed Wright State to control the remainder of the contest.
Jasmine Edwards of Detroit was the game’s standout individual performer, finishing with a game-high 22 points to go with one block in 36 minutes. Her efforts inside were a bright spot for the Titans, who scored 40 of their 61 points in the paint. Kailee Davis added 12 points for Detroit.
Wright State countered with a more distributed offensive effort. Claire Henson, a 5-foot-10 guard from Germantown, Ohio, led the Raiders with 18 points and three assists. Ellie Magestro-Kennedy, a 5-9 guard from Stoughton, Wisconsin, provided a significant spark off the bench, hitting four three-pointers en route to 16 points in just 19 minutes of play. Lauren Scott contributed 13 points, while Rylee Sagester and Breezie Williams added nine and seven points, respectively.
Despite being outscored in the paint and conceding 25 points off turnovers, Wright State’s ability to convert from the perimeter and their lockdown third-quarter defense proved decisive. The Raiders also shared the ball effectively, with Olivia Brown dishing out a team-high four assists.
The announced attendance was 300. Wright State will look to build on the win with a quick turnaround, traveling to face Oakland on Saturday. Detroit will also play Saturday, hosting Fort Wayne.
